About the organisation

The Subordinate Services Selection Board, Punjab was set up under Article 309 of the Constitution of India. Its task is to recruit staff for Group B, Group C and Group D posts in Punjab Government departments, based on requisitions the departments send in. Eligibility

Every candidate, regardless of category, must upload a Punjab Domicile or Residence Certificate that is not older than five years. Reservation benefits are available only to residents of Punjab. Punjabi at Matric standard, or an equivalent qualification, is compulsory for direct appointment to any of these posts, under Rule 17 of the Punjab Civil Services (General and Common Conditions of Service) Rules, 1994.

Reservation categories

Category and category code cannot be changed once the form is submitted. Ex-servicemen posts are filled first by Ex-Servicemen (Self) candidates; only if none are available are they filled by Ex-Servicemen (Dependant) candidates, per a Punjab Government notification dated 8 May 2020.

Age limit (as on 1 January 2026)

• Minimum age for any category: 18 years.
• Maximum age for General category candidates: 37 years.
• Maximum age for Punjab resident SC and BC candidates: 42 years.
• Maximum age for State and Central Government employees, with relaxation: 45 years.
• Maximum age for Punjab resident persons with disabilities, with a 10-year relaxation: 47 years.
• Widows, divorcees and certain categories of married women get relaxation up to 40 years, as per a Punjab Government letter dated 23 April 1984.
• Ex-servicemen resident in Punjab get relaxation under the Punjab Recruitment of Ex-Servicemen Rules, 1982, as amended.

Driver — Rural Development and Panchayat Department
Matric pass, a valid driving licence for light and heavy vehicles, and three years of driving experience.

Clerk (Legal) — six departments
A law graduate from a recognised university or institution, a competitive test held by the recruiting authority, and a Punjabi and English typing test at 30 words per minute. This qualification applies to Clerk (Legal) posts in the Directorate of Employment Generation, Skill Development and Training; the Directorate of Defence Services Welfare, Punjab; the Excise and Taxation Department (Regional Office); the Office of the Labour Commissioner, Punjab; the Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Archaeology and Museums, Punjab; and the Dairy Development Department, Punjab.

Clerk (Accounts) — two departments

• Directorate of Employment Generation, Skill Development and Training: a graduation degree with at least one subject of Statistics, Mathematics or Accounts, and Punjabi passed up to Matric standard, plus a competitive test and a typing test.
• Excise and Taxation Department (Regional Office): a commerce degree from a recognised university or institution, plus a competitive test and a typing test.

Clerk (IT) — three departments

• Excise and Taxation Department (Head Office): a graduate in Computer Application, Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Computer Technology, plus a competitive test and a typing test.
• Office of the Labour Commissioner, Punjab: B.Tech in Computer Science, or B.Sc (Information Technology), or Bachelor of Computer Application, or a graduate with a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application, plus a competitive test and a typing test.
• Civil Aviation Department, Punjab: B.E. or B.Tech in Information Technology, Electronics and Communication or Computer Science with at least 50% aggregate marks, or a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Application with at least 50% aggregate marks and two years of experience in Information and Communication Technology. Punjabi passed at Matriculation level is also required.

Translator — Office of the Labour Commissioner, Punjab
A graduation degree, plus a 120-hour course with hands-on experience in Personal Computer or Information Technology in office productivity or desktop publishing applications, from a government-recognised or ISO 9001 certified institution. A Computer Information Technology course equivalent to the DOEACC ‘O’ level certificate is also accepted.

Field Artist — Directorate of Cultural Affairs, Archaeology and Museums, Punjab
Graduate in Music, Drama or Dance from a recognised university.

Selection process

The written test is Objective Type (Multiple Choice Questions), in two parts, for both groups of posts.

• Part A is a Matric-level Punjabi language paper. It is qualifying only, and candidates need at least 50% marks to pass.
• Part B decides the merit list. Each question carries 1 mark, and a quarter mark is cut for each wrong answer.
• Candidates applying for Clerk (Legal), Clerk (Accounts) and Clerk (IT) posts also sit a Punjabi and English typing test at 30 words per minute, on computer. The Punjabi test uses the Unicode-compliant Raavi font. This test is qualifying only, and candidates for these posts are ranked on a Common Merit List after they pass it.
• If two or more candidates score equal marks, the older candidate (by date of birth) ranks higher. If birth dates also match, the candidate with a higher percentage in the required qualification ranks higher. If that also matches, higher marks in Matriculation decide it. The Board’s decision is final.
• Candidates on the merit list are called for counselling for document verification. How many are called depends on the category-wise number of posts.
• Appearing for the exam, appearing for the typing test, or being called for counselling does not by itself entitle a candidate to recommendation. Recommendation follows only once the Board confirms eligibility in full.
• No travelling or daily allowance is paid for the written exam or counselling.
• Admit cards, the exam schedule, the syllabus and any further update are published only on the Board’s website.

• SC, BC and EWS: ₹250
• Ex-servicemen and dependants: ₹200

How to apply

1. Go to https://sssb.punjab.gov.in and open the “Apply Online” link, between 25 September 2026 and 19 October 2026. Applications through any other method are rejected.
2. New candidates click “Registration” and fill in their details. This generates a User ID (the registered email ID) and password. Existing candidates log in directly.
3. Fill in personal, educational and other required details. Upload a passport-size photo, or capture a live photo, and a scanned signature. Applications without both are treated as incomplete and rejected.
4. Click “Save Draft” or “Next”, then “Attach Annexure” to upload scanned copies of the Class 10 certificate, the educational qualification certificates and other mandatory documents, in PDF format. Click “Save Documents”.
5. Click “Make Payment” and pay the fee online.
6. Click “Submit” to complete the application. Print the confirmation page and keep it.
