About the Organisation

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) is an autonomous body set up by the Reserve Bank of India, central financial institutions, and public sector banks. IBPS conducts the annual Common Recruitment Process (CRP) for clerical and officer posts on behalf of participating public sector banks, including Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Indian Bank, and others. It runs the Online Preliminary and Main examinations, declares results, and manages the provisional allotment of selected candidates to individual banks. IBPS itself does not employ candidates — appointment is made by the bank a candidate is allotted to.

Local Context

This is a nationwide recruitment across 36 states and Union Territories, and a candidate applies for vacancies in only one State/UT of their choice. For candidates based in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, or the wider North Bengal region, the notification lists Siliguri as an examination centre for both the Preliminary and the Main exam, alongside Kolkata, Durgapur, Asansol, and Kalyani for West Bengal. Sikkim-based candidates have Gangtok as the examination centre for both stages. This is added context, not part of the official notification — confirm your allotted exam city on your call letter, since IBPS can allot a centre other than the one chosen. West Bengal’s specified local language for the proficiency test is Bengali or Nepali, and Sikkim’s is Nepali or English, which is relevant for candidates from Darjeeling and the Sikkim hills who study Nepali.

Each state’s total is further split bank-wise, and separately by disability type (HI/OC/VI/ID) and Ex-Servicemen/Disabled Ex-Servicemen count, in Annexure I of the official notification, since 11 individual banks report figures within every state. The EWS vacancies are stated as tentative, subject to further government directives and the outcome of any litigation. “NR” (Not Reported) appears against Union Bank of India for every state, and IBPS has said actual vacancies may include backlog posts for some banks — so the final count is likely to move once Union Bank of India reports its numbers.

Selection Process

Selection has two objective online examinations followed by allotment — there is no interview.

  1. Online Preliminary Examination — English Language (30 questions, 30 marks), Numerical Ability (35 questions, 35 marks), and Reasoning Ability (35 questions, 35 marks); 100 marks total in 60 minutes (each test separately timed). Candidates must clear the sectional cut-off in each test to be shortlisted for the Main exam.
  2. Online Main Examination — General/Financial Awareness (40 questions, 50 marks, 20 minutes), General English (40 questions, 40 marks, 35 minutes), Reasoning Ability (40 questions, 60 marks, 35 minutes), and Quantitative Aptitude (40 questions, 50 marks, 35 minutes); 200 marks total in 125 minutes. Only the Main exam marks count towards the final merit list.
  3. Provisional Allotment — Main exam marks are converted to a score out of 100. Shortlisted candidates are provisionally allotted to one participating bank on a merit-cum-preference basis, depending on the actual vacancies each bank reports for the state applied for. A reserve list of about 30% of vacancies per category may be kept and used up to three or four times within its one-year validity, if banks report further vacancies.
  4. Local Language Proficiency Test — qualifying in nature, conducted after the Main exam/provisional allotment and before joining, unless exempted by a 10th-standard mark sheet.
  5. Document Verification — carried out by the allotted bank at the time of joining.

Practical point: there is a penalty for wrong answers in both the Preliminary and Main exams — one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer, with no penalty for a question left unattempted.

Application Fee

CategoryFee (inclusive of GST)
SC/ST/PwBD/ESM/DESM₹175
All other candidates₹850

Payment is online only, between 01.08.2026 and 21.08.2026, and bank transaction charges are borne by the candidate. A separate correction fee of ₹200 (inclusive of GST) applies to any candidate using the Edit Window to modify their application, regardless of category, and this fee is not refundable.

Should You Apply?

This vacancy suits graduates from any discipline who want an entry-level, clerical-cadre job in a public sector bank with a defined pay scale and long-term service stability, and who are comfortable preparing for two rounds of objective testing rather than an interview. This is added context, not part of the official notification — confirm current promotion norms with the allotted bank.
