About the Organisation

The Union Public Service Commission conducts this recruitment on behalf of the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi. (This background line is added context on UPSC’s general role, not a statement from this specific notification.) Within the notification itself, the posts report to the Directorate of Education, Old Secretariat, Delhi-110054, which is where selected candidates will be posted. A Principal or Vice Principal selected through this drive takes charge of running a government school in Delhi, covering academic, administrative and financial responsibilities.

How This Recruitment Compares

(Added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm current openings independently.) Group “A” Gazetted teaching-administration posts at the Principal and Vice Principal level are released periodically by different state education departments and by organisations such as Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, but the age limits, experience conditions and pay levels differ between them. A candidate already working as a Vice Principal or Post Graduate Teacher and looking to move into full school leadership may find this notification more directly relevant than typical in-cadre promotion routes, since it is open to eligible outside candidates as well, not only internal Delhi government staff.

Selection Process

Selection for both Principal and Vice Principal goes through the same two stages.

  1. Combined Recruitment Test (CRT): An objective-type, multiple-choice test of 2 hours’ duration, carrying 300 marks. The medium is both English and Hindi. Every wrong answer carries a deduction of one-third of the marks assigned to that question; unattempted questions carry no penalty. The syllabus covers General Knowledge (including contemporary social, economic and cultural issues), Hindi and English language skills, Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude, Educational policies and educational measurement and evaluation, Management and Financial administration, Office Procedure, Pedagogy in Education, and Digital Literacy.
  2. Interview: Out of 100 marks. The minimum level of suitability is 50 marks for General/EWS, 45 marks (on relaxed standards) for OBC, and 40 marks (on relaxed standards) for SC/ST/PwBD.

Final merit is decided by combining CRT and interview marks in the ratio 75:25. Candidates called for interview from outside Delhi can claim the Commission’s contribution towards travel, restricted to Second/Sleeper Class train fare, on producing the prescribed TA form and original tickets.

Application Fee

Candidates are required to pay a fee of Rs. 25 through Debit/Credit Card, UPI, or internet banking. Women candidates, and SC/ST/PwBD candidates of any community, are exempt from the fee. OBC, EWS and Unreserved male candidates must pay the full fee — no exemption applies to them. The fee, once paid, is not refunded under any circumstance and cannot be carried forward to another exam.

Should You Apply?

(Added context and judgment, not part of the official notification.) This recruitment suits serving teachers and Vice Principals who already meet the stated experience — 10 years for Principal, 2–3 years for Vice Principal — and who want a permanent, Group “A” Gazetted central government post rather than a state cadre promotion. It does not suit candidates who are short on the required years of teaching experience, since the notification gives no lateral entry route around that condition. Competition is likely to be significant, given that a permanent central government post at this level, open to outside candidates and not restricted to internal promotion, does not come up often. One honest trade-off: the Vice Principal post has a much larger number of vacancies and a lower experience bar, but also a lower pay level (Level-10) and a younger upper age limit than Principal (Level-12). Candidates eligible for both should weigh whether they would rather apply now for Vice Principal or wait until they cross the 10-year mark for Principal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last date to apply for UPSC Principal and Vice Principal Recruitment 2026?

The last date to apply online is 14 August 2026, up to 1800 hrs, through upsconline.nic.in. No applications are accepted after this deadline, and submitted applications cannot be withdrawn or edited afterward.

What is the salary of Principal and Vice Principal in Delhi Education Department?

Principal carries Pay Level-12 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix, and Vice Principal carries Pay Level-10. The notification does not state exact in-hand salary figures, so candidates should check the standard Level-12 and Level-10 pay matrices for exact basic pay slabs.

How many vacancies are there in UPSC Advertisement No. 51/2026?

This notification carries 828 vacancies in total — 124 for Principal and 704 for Vice Principal, in the Education Department, Government of NCT of Delhi. Category-wise and PwBD-wise breakdowns for both posts are given in the notification.

Is moving from Vice Principal to Principal through this notification a good career step?

(Added context, not part of the official notification.) For a serving Vice Principal or senior teacher who meets the 10-year experience condition, applying for Principal is a natural next step in school leadership, since it is a higher pay level in the same administrative line. Candidates who do not yet meet the experience bar can still apply for Vice Principal in this same notification.
