How This Vacancy Compares

The cultural quota fills posts through a talent test, so a written exam alone does not decide selection. Half of the 100 marks come from the practical demonstration and certificates.

Only 2 posts are open under the Southern Railway Cultural Quota, one in each discipline. Candidates can compare this vacancy with other current openings across India before applying. Candidates from North Bengal, Sikkim and the North East should plan for travel costs, since RRC Chennai sets the test venue.

Should you apply?

Candidates with a recognised degree, diploma or certificate in Indian Classical Dance or Mridangam can apply for the Southern Railway Cultural Quota. They also need a 12th pass. Experience on All India Radio or Doordarshan, or a national level prize, counts as a desirable qualification.

The Classical Dance and Mridangam posts suit candidates who can perform in a practical demonstration. That stage carries 35 of the 100 marks, and candidates must bring their own musical instrument.

The main trade-off in the Southern Railway Cultural Quota is the number of posts. With one post per discipline, competition for each seat is likely to be tough. Most candidates also pay their own travel, because only SC and ST candidates get a free pass.

Candidature stays provisional at every stage. Candidates can browse other government job vacancies before deciding.

FAQs

What is the last date to apply for Southern Railway Cultural Quota 2026?

The last date is 2 November 2026, up to 23.59 hrs. Candidates apply online through the link on rrcmas.in. Applications opened on 3 October 2026.

Do candidates get a free railway pass for the Southern Railway Cultural Quota test?

Only SC and ST candidates get a II-Class free pass. It covers the trip from their nearest railway station to the station nearest the written test venue. Other candidates make their own travel arrangements, and RRC Chennai pays no travel allowance, daily allowance or accommodation.

Can government employees apply for the RRC Chennai cultural quota posts?

Yes. Candidates serving in a Central or State Government department, Railways or a Public Sector Undertaking can apply directly to RRC Chennai. They must inform their employer. Shortlisted candidates must produce a No Objection Certificate from the employer on the document verification date, or RRC Chennai cancels the candidature.

How is the cultural quota recruitment different from other railway recruitment?

Half of the 100 marks come from the practical demonstration and certificates, so talent counts as much as the written test. Other railway recruitment, such as NTPC, does not test a performing art. The cultural quota suits artists with a recognised dance or mridangam qualification.
