Selection process for WBPSC Clerkship Recruitment 2026

The WBPSC Clerkship selection runs in stages. The Commission holds Part-I first, and a limited number of candidates with qualifying marks move to Part-II.

  1. Part-I, objective type (multiple choice).
  2. Part-II, conventional type (written), on a date to be notified.
  3. Test of elementary knowledge in computer operation and typing on a computer, for candidates who qualify in Part-I and Part-II.
  4. Final merit list on the total marks of Part-I and Part-II, for candidates who qualify in the computer and typing test.

A candidate who qualifies for Part-II but does not appear is left out of the final merit list.

Qualifying marks

The Commission fixed these WBPSC Clerkship qualifying marks in aggregate, from Part-I and Part-II taken together.

CategoryQualifying Marks
UR40%
EWS40%
OBC38%
SC35%
ST30%
PwBD30%
Ex-Servicemen30%

The Commission can relax these marks further if many reserved posts remain unfilled.

Marking and tie-breaking rules

  • Each wrong answer in the multiple-choice questions costs 0.25 mark.
  • Writing a name, roll number or identifying mark in a Part-II answer script costs 10% of full marks in that paper.
  • Objections to the model answers must reach the Commission within the stated time limit.

For a tie, the Commission applies these steps in order.

  1. Higher aggregate marks in English and Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali.
  2. Higher marks in English.
  3. Higher age.

Posting options

Candidates for the WBPSC Clerkship must list options in order of preference. The options cover the Secretariat Departments, the Directorates and the Regional Offices, including District offices of one district or Kolkata. Filling the option is mandatory.

The Commission fills vacancies by merit, position and option. It recommends candidates against non-joining vacancies only in the Regional Offices.

Scribe and extra time for PwBD candidates

Candidates with Benchmark Disabilities and a limitation in writing can use a scribe, whose qualification must be one step below the candidate’s. A valid Appendix-I certificate also gives 20 minutes of compensatory time per hour. The Commission does not accept a scribe request after the application is submitted.

Should you apply?

This vacancy suits candidates who have passed Madhyamik, can type on a computer and want a state government clerical post. The Level 6 pay scale and a posting choice within one district or Kolkata make the WBPSC Clerkship a steady option.

It does not suit candidates who cannot read, write and speak Bengali, unless their mother tongue is Nepali. SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates from other states apply as general candidates. Candidates can also compare other government jobs before applying.

The Commission has not announced the vacancy count, so competition cannot be judged yet. A clerical post that asks only for Madhyamik draws a wide field of applicants. The trade-off is a temporary appointment at the start, and two exam stages that run on dates still to be notified.

This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office.
