About the organisation

RailTel Corporation of India Ltd. (RCIL) is a Navratna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the largest neutral telecom infrastructure providers in the country, operating a Pan-India Optic Fibre Network laid along railway track on exclusive Right of Way. RailTel works on nationwide connectivity and digital infrastructure projects. For an apprentice, this means training inside a large government telecom network operator, with exposure to fibre infrastructure, IT systems and telecom operations rather than a single office function.

Local context / how it compares

This is a pan-India apprenticeship, not a single-city posting. For candidates from Darjeeling, Siliguri and the wider North Bengal region, New Jalpaiguri is listed among RCIL’s Eastern Region locations, alongside Guwahati, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office: New Jalpaiguri is the railway junction that serves Siliguri, so an apprentice who wants to stay close to home has that option, subject to seat availability at that location, as the notification itself allows candidates to opt for any location of convenience. Compared with other current listings in the site’s Apprentice section, this notification stands out for covering nearly every region of the country in a single recruitment cycle rather than one state or zone. This regional comparison is also added context and has not been independently verified beyond what appears on this site.

Important dates

The notification gives one key date besides its own release — the closing date for applications. No separate application-opening date, exam date or interview date is mentioned.

Vacancy details and stipend

RCIL has listed two apprentice categories, both drawn from the same set of engineering streams. The notification does not split the 32 and 8 posts further by individual discipline or by region — both figures are totals across all listed locations.

Selection process

RCIL will prepare a merit list for each region, state and location combination from the applications received online, giving preference to candidates from Government institutions. Shortlisting is based on the marks scored in the qualifying degree or diploma, and an interview wherever the Corporation requires one.

  1. Online application through the NATS 2.0 portal
  2. Preparation of a region/state/location-wise merit list, with preference to Government institution pass-outs
  3. Shortlisting based on qualifying marks and/or interview, as required
  4. Medical fitness check as per Corporation norms
  5. Verification of certificates and testimonials (candidature stays provisional until this is complete)

The notification states plainly that merely meeting the eligibility criteria does not assure engagement, and that filling of seats is entirely at the discretion of the management based on candidate suitability.

Should you apply?

This apprenticeship suits fresh engineering graduates and diploma holders in electronics, telecommunication, computer science or electrical branches who want structured, one-year, hands-on exposure inside a large government telecom operator without committing to years of private-sector job hunting first. The wide spread of locations means a candidate is not tied to one city and can request a preferred region.

It does not suit candidates who already have a year or more of work experience or a prior apprenticeship, since the notification excludes them outright. It also does not suit anyone looking for guaranteed permanent employment: RCIL states clearly that apprentices have no right to claim regular employment at the end of the year.

The consolidated stipend (₹14,000 for Graduate Engineers, ₹12,000 for Diploma Engineers) is fixed under the Apprentices Act framework, with no other allowance paid. Added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office: competition is likely to be strong, since only 40 posts are open nationwide and selection runs on a qualifying-marks merit list, not a written exam, so degree or diploma marks matter directly.
