About NIT Durgapur

NIT Durgapur began in 1960 as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur, and functions today as a fully-funded technological institute of the Government of India, run by an autonomous Board of Governors. It has been designated an Institute of National Importance under the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, and operates under the Ministry of Education. This particular vacancy sits in its Department of Electrical Engineering and is tied to a project funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) — the apex national body, set up under the ANRF Act, 2023, that funds and coordinates scientific research at India’s universities and research institutions, in place of the earlier Science and Engineering Research Board.

Local context

Durgapur is an industrial town in Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal, on the Howrah–Asansol rail line and the Grand Trunk Road corridor connecting it to Kolkata and other parts of the state. Since this year’s selection is a walk-in interview held in online mode, candidates do not need to travel to the campus for the interview itself; travel becomes relevant only once a candidate is selected and needs to report to the Electrical Engineering Department for project work. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm project reporting requirements with the hiring department.

Should you apply?

This role suits BE/B.Tech or ME/M.Tech graduates in Electrical, Electronics, Communication or Instrumentation Engineering with a valid GATE score, who want hands-on exposure to a funded research project in high-voltage sensing and partial-discharge monitoring. It also suits candidates comfortable working toward a Ph.D. alongside the fellowship, since the JRF-to-SRF upgrade path is tied to Ph.D. enrolment and periodic assessment. It is less suited to candidates looking for a permanent government job: the position is purely contractual, limited to the project’s duration, carries no entitlement to a regular appointment, no retirement benefits, and no TA/DA for the interview. With only one post and a fairly specialised skill requirement, competition will likely come from a narrower pool of candidates with matching EE/ECE research and programming backgrounds rather than the very large applicant numbers seen in general recruitment exams. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring department.
