About GRSE

GRSE is a Navratna central public sector enterprise (CPSE) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It is one of the premier defence shipyards in the country and builds warships.

The registered and corporate office is GRSE Bhavan, 61 Garden Reach Road, Kolkata 700024. Journeymen train in allied trades besides their parent trade, so GRSE Journeyman recruitment builds multi-skill experience inside a defence shipyard.

Local Context and How It Compares

GRSE works from Kolkata. The written test for GRSE Journeyman recruitment takes place in Kolkata and Ranchi. Outstation candidates travel to Kolkata for document verification and the practical test.

Candidates from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and other North Bengal towns can reach Kolkata by train. Sikkim and North East candidates can use the same rail routes through North Bengal. More West Bengal government jobs are listed on the site.

Many defence PSU trade posts follow the same pattern of a written test and a trade test, so preparation carries over. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office.

Candidates with a graduate or postgraduate degree in Engineering, Technology or Pharmacy cannot apply for any post. The bar also covers an MBA, CA, CMA, CS, LL.B, MCA, Ph.D or any equivalent higher professional qualification. Hiding a qualification makes a selection void.

Selection Process

Selection in the GRSE Journeyman recruitment runs through a written test followed by a practical (trade) test. Driver (Vehicle) candidates follow the same two stages. The final merit list rests on written test marks.

  1. Shortlisting. For Journeyman posts, GRSE may shortlist by percentage of marks in the qualifying exam if many applications arrive. NAC-only candidates use AITT marks under the ATS exam. NTC-only or NAC and NTC candidates use AITT marks under the CTS exam. For Driver (Vehicle), shortlisting depends on the nature and years of relevant experience.
  2. Written test. An OMR-based pen-and-paper test of 100 marks and 2 hours, held in Kolkata and Ranchi. It has 100 objective questions. Part I carries 80 marks for the trade subject. Part II carries 20 marks for General Knowledge, Aptitude, Reasoning, Mental Ability and Numerical Ability. The paper is in English and Hindi.
  3. Document verification. GRSE checks the documents of shortlisted candidates before the practical test. Only those who clear it can appear for the practical test.
  4. Practical (trade) test. A qualifying test of 50 marks. GRSE calls up to 5 candidates per vacancy in order of merit. Candidates tied on the last mark are also called.
  5. Physical Efficiency Test (PET). Shortlisted candidates for Driver Material Handling, Rigger and Crane Operator face a qualifying PET. It does not apply to ex-Agniveers.
  6. Medical and police clearance. Selection depends on medical fitness, and joining requires a Police Clearance Certificate.

Driver written test40%35% (OBC)30%

GRSE pays no travel allowance for the written test. Outstation candidates called for document verification or the practical test get rail fare to Kolkata by the shortest route. GRSE pays second-class or sleeper-class fare, or the actual fare if lower. Where no rail link exists, GRSE pays non-AC bus fare. It reimburses the amount by bank transfer after the candidate submits tickets and bank details.

Should you apply?

The GRSE Journeyman recruitment suits candidates within the 26-year age limit who want to start inside a defence shipyard. They need a 10th pass and an NAC or NTC. The route begins with a two-year stipend period. Absorption into the SSK grade depends on performance, vacancies, medical fitness and clearances. It is not automatic.

The Driver (Vehicle) posts suit drivers with six years of verified experience and a clean driving record. Skilled grade pay and a one-year probation apply from joining.

Competition will be tight in trades with only 2 posts, namely Carpenter, Crane Operator, Diesel Mechanic, Driver Material Handling and Welder. Candidates with a graduate or higher professional qualification cannot apply. Posting can fall at any GRSE unit, project or location, which matters for candidates who cannot relocate.

This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office.
