About State Bank of India
State Bank of India is India’s largest public sector bank, offering banking, insurance and financial services nationwide from its Corporate Centre in Mumbai. The Central Recruitment & Promotion Department runs this hiring drive for Junior Associate — the entry-level clerical role handling customer service, banking transactions and cross-selling at branches. The notification itself states SBI was recognised as the World’s Best Consumer Bank 2026 (second year running) by Global Finance, New York, and as India’s Strongest Banking Brand 2026 by Brand Finance — a signal of the scale and stability of the employer behind this post.

SBI Junior Associate 2026: Nepali accepted for West Bengal, Sikkim gets its own quota
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website.
This drive is directly relevant to candidates in Darjeeling, Siliguri, North Bengal and Sikkim. The West Bengal post (Kolkata Circle) accepts either Bengali or Nepali as the specified local language — candidates only need to clear a test in one of these, so Nepali-speaking candidates from the Darjeeling hills are not required to know Bengali. Sikkim is listed as its own separate State/UT with its own vacancy quota and accepts Nepali or English.
On exam centres, Annexure I of the notification lists Siliguri among the tentative West Bengal centres (along with Asansol, Durgapur, Kolkata, Hooghly, Kalyani and Burdwan), and Gangtok as the only listed Sikkim centre. A candidate based in Darjeeling or Kalimpong may be able to sit the exam without travelling to Kolkata, depending on which centre SBI finally allots — SBI reserves the right to allot any centre regardless of preference. Candidates should also note SBI’s own state grouping: those applying for West Bengal jobs generally fall under the West Bengal Jobs coverage on this site, while candidates from Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Siliguri specifically can also track region-relevant postings under North Bengal Jobs, and Sikkim candidates under Sikkim Jobs.

Selection process
Selection has three stages: an online Preliminary Examination, an online Main Examination, and a Local Language Proficiency Test for candidates who need it.
- Preliminary Examination — Objective test, 100 marks, 1 hour, in three sections: English Language (30 questions/30 marks/20 min), Numerical Ability (35/35/20 min), Reasoning Ability (35/35/20 min). Approximately 10 times the number of vacancies per category (subject to availability) are shortlisted for the Main Exam based on Prelim score.
- Main Examination — Objective test, 190 questions/200 marks, 2 hours 40 minutes, in four sections: General/Financial Awareness (50/50/35 min), General English (40/40/35 min), Quantitative Aptitude (50/50/45 min), Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude (50/60/45 min).
- Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) — For provisionally selected candidates who have not studied the opted local language at Class 10th or 12th level. Non-verbal section: objective (3 passages/15 questions/15 marks) and subjective (3 passages/15 questions/15 marks); Verbal Test: 20 marks.
Both objective tests carry negative marking of 1/4th mark per wrong answer. Prelim marks are not added to the final merit — only Main Exam aggregate marks decide the final merit list, subject to qualifying the LLPT where applicable. A wait list of up to 50% of vacancies (State-category-wise) is maintained, valid for one year, released quarterly against non-joining or resignation.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website: Trained Apprentices of SBI who meet the notified conditions get 2.5% bonus marks (5 out of 200) added to their Main Exam aggregate.

Should you apply?
This suits graduates who want a secure, pensionable public-sector banking career with nationwide brand recognition, and who are comfortable with customer-facing sales and service work — the notification itself states the role involves customer calls, cross-selling and outdoor travel. It does not suit candidates who want a fixed desk role only, since duties may involve flexible hours and shift work.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. Competition for SBI Clerk drives is generally considered high nationwide, since the Preliminary Exam shortlists only around 10 times the number of vacancies per category for the Main Exam, and the Main Exam alone decides the final merit list.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. One honest trade-off: there is no Inter-Circle or Inter-State transfer for the first 5 years of service, so a candidate should be prepared to work in the State/UT they apply for during that period; transfer after that is only at the Bank’s discretion for exceptional grounds such as extreme compassionate grounds or spouse posting.
