About the organisation

Eligibility (post-wise)

1. Agricultural Engineer

Age: 33 years (OBC). Qualification: Degree in Agricultural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university. Experience: 2 years’ experience testing and evaluating agricultural machinery, or 2 years’ teaching/training experience including operation or maintenance of tractors and implements — from government, PSU, agricultural university, or a recognized research/statutory body. Desirable: 1 year of practical experience in mechanised farming.

2. Medical Officer/Research Officer (Unani)

Age: 35 years (UR/EWS), 38 years (OBC), 40 years (SC). Qualification: Degree in Unani Medicine from a recognized university/statutory board/council under the Indian Medicine Central Council Act, 1970, and enrolment on the Central or a State Register of Indian Medicine. No separate experience requirement is stated.

3. Scientist ‘B’ (Botany)

Age: 35 years (UR). Qualification: Master’s Degree in Botany. Experience: 3 years’ research experience in Botany after the qualifying degree. Desirable: PhD in Botany; 1 year in a cultural-property conservation lab; 1 year in non-destructive testing/analysis.

4. Scientist ‘B’ (Environmental Science)

Age: 35 years (UR). Qualification: Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technology specialising in Environmental Science and Engineering. Experience: 3 years’ research experience in Environmental Science. Desirable: PhD in Environmental Science; 1 year conservation-lab experience; 1 year non-destructive testing/analysis experience.

5. Scientist ‘B’ (Geology)

Age: 35 years (UR). Qualification: Master’s Degree in Geology. Experience: 3 years’ research experience in Geology. Desirable: PhD in Geology; 1 year conservation-lab experience; 1 year non-destructive testing/analysis experience.

6. Scientist ‘B’ (Physics)

Age: 38 years (OBC). Qualification: Master’s Degree in Physics. Experience: 3 years’ research experience in Physics. Desirable: PhD in Physics; 1 year conservation-lab experience; 1 year non-destructive testing/analysis experience.

7. Scientist ‘B’ (Zoology)

Age: 40 years (SC). Qualification: Master’s Degree in Zoology. Experience: 3 years’ research experience in Zoology. Desirable: PhD in Zoology; 1 year conservation-lab experience; 1 year non-destructive testing/analysis experience.

8. Civilian Medical Officer

Age: 35 years (UR/EWS), 38 years (OBC), 40 years (SC/ST). Qualification: A recognized MBBS degree under the Indian Medical Council/NMC Act, 1956, and completion of compulsory rotating internship (candidates who have not finished internship may still appear, provided it is completed before appointment). Desirable: Postgraduate medical qualification in any discipline.

9. Specialist Grade III Assistant Professor (Immuno-Haematology and Blood Transfusion)

Age: 40 years (UR), 43 years (OBC). Qualification: MBBS plus a postgraduate degree such as MD (Immunology), MD (Immuno-Haematology and Blood Transfusion), DNB (Immunology/Immuno-Haematology and Blood Transfusion), or MD/DNB in Pathology, Bacteriology, or Haematology with 2 years’ teaching experience or special training in Immuno-Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Experience: at least 3 years’ teaching experience as Senior Resident, Tutor, Demonstrator, Registrar, Assistant Professor, or Lecturer in the speciality after the first postgraduate degree.

10. Specialist Grade III Assistant Professor (Surgical Oncology)

Age: 43 years (OBC). Qualification: MBBS plus a postgraduate qualification such as MCh (Surgical Oncology), DNB (Surgical Oncology), or MS (General Surgery/ENT/Orthopaedics) or MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) with 2 years’ special training in Surgical Oncology. Experience: at least 3 years’ teaching experience in the speciality after the first postgraduate degree, on the same terms as post 9 above.

11. Assistant Industrial Adviser

Age: 35 years (UR). Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Metallurgical, or Electronics & Communication Engineering. Experience: 3 years in steel works, rolling mills, or plant/machine-tool manufacturing, or 3 years in production, planning, development, or research in the iron and steel industry. Desirable: Master’s Degree in the same engineering fields.

12. Veterinary Assistant Surgeon

Age: 35 years (UR), 38 years (OBC), 40 years (SC). Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, or Veterinary Science, and registration with the Veterinary Council of India or a State/UT Veterinary Council. No separate experience requirement is stated. Knowledge of Tamil, Malayalam, or Telugu is noted as an advantage for this post.

All age limits above are relaxable for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD/Ex-servicemen/Central-UT government servants as described in the notification’s Concessions & Relaxations section. PwBD candidates get a further 10 years’ age relaxation on posts identified as suitable, subject to a maximum age of 56 years.

Selection process

Selection for every post in this notification is by interview (Recruitment by Selection). Where the number of applicants for a post is large, UPSC may restrict the number called for interview using one or more shortlisting methods named in the notification — for example, higher qualifications or experience than the minimum, or a Recruitment Test.

1. Online application and document upload.
2. Shortlisting, if the number of applications is large (by desirable qualification, higher qualification, more experience, or a Recruitment Test).
3. Interview, with a minimum qualifying score of 50 marks for UR, 45 for OBC, and 40 for SC/ST/PwBD, out of 100.
4. Document verification at the interview stage.

Candidates who travel from outside Delhi for the interview can claim UPSC’s contribution towards travel, which is restricted to Second/Sleeper Class train fare (Mail/Express), even if they travel by another class or mode.

Application fee

The application fee is Rs. 25, payable online by Visa/Master/RuPay Credit or Debit Card, UPI, or net banking. No fee applies to Women, SC, ST, or PwBD candidates of any community. OBC, EWS, and unreserved male candidates must pay the full fee. The fee is non-refundable once paid, and applications submitted without the required fee are rejected.

How to apply

1. Register on the UPSC Online Application Portal at upsconline.nic.in/ora and complete Account Creation.
2. Complete the Universal Registration Number (URN) profile; this generates a URN common to all UPSC recruitment.
3. Fill the Common Application Form (CAF), including a live photograph capture and an uploaded signature.
4. Fill the fourth, post-specific module for the vacancy being applied for; this generates a post-specific Application Number.
5. Upload supporting documents against each claim made (date of birth, category, qualification, experience, disability, and so on) as separate PDF files.
6. Pay the application fee online, where applicable.
7. Submit the form and print the finally submitted application. Applications cannot be withdrawn or edited after submission.

This notification suits candidates who already hold the exact qualification and, for most posts, the years of relevant experience each post names — it is not aimed at fresh graduates with no field experience, except possibly for the two Unani and Veterinary posts, which do not state a separate experience clause. The 12 posts differ sharply in how competitive they are likely to be: single-vacancy posts, like each Scientist ‘B’ discipline, draw applicants from across the country for one seat, while larger posts, like the 18 Civilian Medical Officer vacancies, offer better odds per applicant. All posts are permanent Group A or Group B central government positions with pension and other central government benefits. The main trade-off is posting location and service liability — most posts carry an All India Service Liability or a stated liability to serve anywhere in India, and the two Specialist Grade III teaching posts additionally carry a possible Defence-service liability of up to four years.
