Local context: Is this relevant for candidates outside Nagpur?
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office. MECL does not fix a posting location in advance for these Non-Executive posts — selected candidates can be sent to any Project site or office of the company in India or overseas, so a candidate from Darjeeling, Sikkim or North Bengal is as likely to be posted outside the region as within it. Central PSU non-executive roles of this kind typically offer defined pay scales and long-term service conditions, which is part of why they draw applicants from outside the traditional metro base even when the exact posting cannot be chosen in advance.

For the technical trades — Machinist, Technician (Drilling), Mechanic and Mechanic-cum-Operator (Drilling) — the notification also lists detailed desirable proficiencies covering hands-on machining or drilling-rig operation, tool handling, troubleshooting and safety awareness; candidates in these trades should read the full official notification for the complete skill list. Minimum qualifying marks in the essential qualification are 45% for direct recruitment to all Non-Executive posts; for qualifications like Intermediate CA/ICWA and certifications with no stipulated marks, a pass is sufficient. Age is reckoned as on the cut-off date of 1 September 2026, with relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, 10–15 years for PwD candidates depending on category, and relaxation for Ex-Servicemen as per Government of India guidelines.
Selection process
MECL Recruitment 2026 selection process follows a four-stage process, all conducted at Nagpur:
- Screening of applications — a Screening Committee segregates candidates into “Eligible” and “Not Eligible” based on the details entered in the online form.
- Written Test (100% weightage) — conducted by an independent external agency notified as a Public Examination Authority under the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Category-wise cut-off: UR/OBC-NCL/EWS — 50%, SC/ST — 45%, PwD — relaxed standard as per government guidelines. A merit list is drawn from candidates scoring at or above the cut-off.
- Document Verification — candidates in the written-test merit list are called in a ratio of up to 1:7 per vacancy (7 candidates per post, in order of merit); if fewer candidates clear the written test than this ratio, all of them are called.
- Skill Test / Trade Test (qualifying only) — an internal committee marks candidates “Suitable” or “Not Suitable.” The Final Merit List is then drawn from written-test marks alone, after eliminating “Not Suitable” candidates.
Selection is followed by a medical fitness examination by a Government Medical Officer or CMO of a Government Hospital. For Junior Driver, Mechanic, Mechanic-cum-Operator (Drilling), Machinist, Technician (Drilling) and Electrician, absence of colour blindness and night blindness is a mandatory requirement in the medical protocol. No travelling allowance (TA) is paid for the written test, document verification, skill test or trade test.

Should you apply for MECL Recruitment 2026?
MECL Recruitment 2026 suits candidates across a wide qualification range — 10th pass with a driving licence for Junior Driver, ITI or diploma holders for the technical and drilling trades, and graduates or B.Com holders for the Assistant, Accountant and HR posts. The written test carries full weightage and is held only at Nagpur, so candidates from outside Maharashtra should plan for a single-city test rather than a regional centre. A large share of the vacancies in several posts — including Technician (Drilling), Technician (Laboratory) and Machinist — are entirely Backlog vacancies reserved for SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates, which narrows the field for unreserved candidates in those specific posts; the Assistant (IT) post, by contrast, is entirely Fresh vacancies. The posting can be anywhere in India or overseas, which is a genuine trade-off for candidates who need a fixed location. The skill or trade test is qualifying only, so the written test score alone decides the final merit list — candidates should weigh their preparation accordingly.
