Eligibility

Eligibility for POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2027 rests on a valid GATE 2027 score, the right qualification, and the age limit.

Qualification and GATE 2027 paper, by discipline

The qualification must be a full-time B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc (Engg.) degree from a recognised university or institute, with minimum 60% marks or equivalent CGPA. Candidates from any other discipline are not eligible, though POWERGRID may decide to treat a different discipline as eligible. Final-year students can also apply if they expect their result by 31 August 2027, with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA up to the pre-final examination. Graduates who plan further studies right after this degree, or who would need extra time before joining if selected, should not apply.

OBC(NCL) candidates get 3 years of relaxation, and SC/ST candidates get 5 years, for posts reserved for that category. PwBD candidates get 10 years (UR/EWS), 13 years (OBC(NCL)) or 15 years (SC/ST) of relaxation. Ex-servicemen and victims of riots get relaxation as per Government of India directives. Qualifying marks in the essential qualification are relaxed to pass marks for SC/ST/PwBD candidates, for posts reserved for that category, as detailed in the final advertisement.

• Engineer Trainee (Electronics): Deaf, Hard of Hearing; One Leg, One Arm, Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victim, SD/SI without associated neurological/limb dysfunction, or SD/SI with associated limb dysfunction; Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mild), Specific Learning Disability, Mental Illness; Multiple Disability involving the above.
• Engineer Trainee (Civil): Deaf, Hard of Hearing; One Arm, One Leg, Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victim, SD/SI without associated neurological/limb dysfunction, or SD/SI with associated limb dysfunction; Specific Learning Disability, Mental Illness; Multiple Disabilities involving the above.
• Engineer Trainee (Computer Science): Blind, Low Vision; Deaf, Hard of Hearing; One Arm, One Leg, One Arm and One Leg, Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy Cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack Victim, Both Legs, Muscular Dystrophy, SD/SI without associated neurological/limb dysfunction, or SD/SI with associated limb dysfunction; Autism Spectrum Disorder (Mild), Specific Learning Disability, Mental Illness; Multiple Disabilities involving the above.

Certificates needed for reservation

Reservation for SC/ST needs a caste certificate, in the Government of India format, at the time of application and at every stage of the process. Reservation for OBC(NCL) needs a certificate based on income for FY 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26, issued on or after 1 April 2026, along with a self-undertaking of non-creamy layer status. Reservation for EWS needs an Income and Asset Certificate based on FY 2025-26 income, issued on or after 1 April 2026, with the caste named clearly on it. Reservation for PwBD needs a medical certificate from a Government Medical Board and a Unique Disability ID (UDID) card or certificate. If a caste or category certificate is not in Hindi or English, a certified translation is needed at the time of document verification. Trainees, apprentices and interns already working at POWERGRID are not treated as departmental candidates for this recruitment.

Selection process

POWERGRID has not yet announced the selection process for Engineer Trainee 2027. The notification states these details, along with the number of vacancies and reservation, will be published on the POWERGRID website before online registration opens. Selection begins with a valid score in the relevant GATE 2027 paper, against qualifying marks declared by the GATE 2027 organising body. Compensation package

Selected candidates are placed in the pay scale of ₹40,000 – 3% – 1,40,000 (IDA) during the one-year training period, with Basic Pay of ₹40,000 plus IDA, HRA and Perks at 12% of basic pay.

The CTC changes with the location of posting and other terms of appointment. On regularisation, the compensation package includes Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance, Perquisites and Allowance under a cafeteria approach, Performance Related Pay, company accommodation or HRA, conveyance and digital services reimbursement, uniform, a laptop facility, PF, Gratuity, Pension and Leave encashment, and Group Insurance. POWERGRID also offers House Building Advance and other advances, and medical facilities for regular employees and their dependants.

Service agreement bond

Selected candidates must sign a service agreement bond to complete the training and then serve POWERGRID for at least three years. The bond amount is ₹5,00,000 for General, OBC(NCL) and EWS candidates, and ₹2,50,000 for SC/ST/PwBD candidates.

The application fee for POWERGRID is ₹500, paid online and non-refundable. SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen and departmental candidates are exempted from this fee.

Should you apply?

POWERGRID Engineer Trainee 2027 suits fresh engineering graduates in Electrical, Civil, Computer Science or Electronics who already plan to sit for GATE, since the exam is the only entry gate here.
