About the Organisation
The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal is a quasi-judicial appellate body under the Ministry of Law & Justice. It hears appeals against orders passed by income tax authorities and is one of the oldest tribunals in the country, with Benches spread across major cities. For a candidate, working here means a Group ‘B’ Gazetted post inside the judicial system, regular court-style working hours, and exposure to legal and administrative drafting rather than routine desk work.

How This Vacancy Compares
This is added context based on similar recent recruitments, not part of the official notification. Confirm current openings on the respective portals.
Private Secretary and stenographer-level vacancies of this kind also come up periodically in the High Courts, the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), and the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). ITAT’s pay levels (7 and 8) and the two-year probation period are broadly in line with these other tribunals. Since this notice covers 9 exam centres and both existing and anticipated vacancies, the total number of posts filled could rise further, which typically makes ITAT’s cycle a slightly wider opportunity than a single-city High Court recruitment of similar seniority.

Eligibility
The same eligibility applies to both Senior Private Secretary and Private Secretary posts:
- A degree of a recognised university or equivalent
- A speed of 120 w.p.m. in English Shorthand
- Working knowledge of computers, including MS Office, Excel, or Page-makers
Age limit: Candidates must not exceed 35 years of age. Standard age relaxation, as per Central Government instructions, applies to Government servants and SC/ST/OBC candidates. The crucial date for calculating age is the 30th day from the date of publication of the advertisement in the Employment News. The notification states this same crucial date also applies to candidates residing in Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Ladakh, Lahaul & Spiti and Pangi Sub-Division of Himachal Pradesh, and the Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar Islands or Lakshadweep.
Candidates wishing to apply for both posts need to submit only a single application. A single examination will be held for both, and the post offered will depend on the candidate’s rank in the consolidated merit list.
Selection Process
Selection goes through three stages, in this order:
- Written Examination — Paper 1: General English (100 marks — essay of at least 250 words, letter writing, precis writing, grammar); Paper 2: General Knowledge & Reasoning (100 marks — GK/GS, logical reasoning, current affairs). Both papers are in English only.
- Skill Test — 100 marks, covering English Shorthand at 120 w.p.m. and English Typing at 45 w.p.m. Only candidates who clear the written exam’s minimum qualifying marks are evaluated here.
- Personal Interview — 75 marks, for candidates shortlisted after the skill test. The date and venue will be announced later.
Minimum qualifying marks (category-wise):
| Category | Marks in each paper | Aggregate of both papers |
|---|---|---|
| General | 40% | 50% |
| OBC / EWS | 35% | 45% |
| SC / ST / PWD | 30% | 40% |
The written exam and skill test will be held at 9 centres: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad. Candidates must choose two centres in order of preference; ITAT can cancel a centre with low applications and shift candidates to their second choice. No TA/DA is payable for appearing at any stage, except that SC/ST candidates not already employed in Government service will be reimbursed 2nd class/sleeper class train or bus fare by the shortest route, on production of tickets.

Should You Apply?
This vacancy suits candidates who already have strong English shorthand and typing speed, since the skill test carries real weight and cannot be skipped. It also suits candidates comfortable with an all-India transfer liability, since the posting can be at any ITAT Bench in the country, not a fixed city. The pay levels (7 and 8) and Group ‘B’ Gazetted status make this a genuine step up from most clerical-grade posts, with a clear promotion structure typical of tribunal service.
It may not suit candidates who want a fixed posting location or who are not yet at the 120 w.p.m. shorthand and 45 w.p.m. typing benchmark, since there is limited time between now and the skill test to build that speed from scratch. The two-year probation period and the possibility of transfer across Benches are the main trade-offs candidates should weigh before applying, against the stability and pay of a permanent Central Government post.
FAQs
Is there an age relaxation for reserved categories?
Yes. Standard relaxation as per Central Government instructions applies to SC, ST, OBC candidates and existing Government servants, in addition to the general 35-year limit.
Can a candidate apply for both Senior Private Secretary and Private Secretary?
Yes. Only one application is needed. Both posts share a single written exam and skill test, and the post offered depends on the candidate’s rank in the combined merit list.
Where will the written exam be held?
At one of 9 centres — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, or Hyderabad — based on the two preferences a candidate selects during application.
