About National Insurance Company Limited

National Insurance Company Limited is a Government of India Undertaking and one of the country’s leading Public Sector General Insurance companies. Its registered and head office is in New Town, Kolkata. The company sells general insurance products such as motor, health, fire and marine insurance across India through a large branch network. How This Vacancy Compares

This is an all-India recruitment, open to candidates across 29 States and Union Territories, but selection is done state-wise. A candidate applies for one State/UT only and competes against other applicants for that state’s quota, not against the whole country. This matters for competition: a state like Maharashtra has 57 posts on offer, while a state like Nagaland has only 1. Candidates from smaller states face a much smaller vacancy pool, so competition per seat can be sharper even though fewer people may apply overall.

This is added context based on how similar clerical-cadre PSU insurance and bank recruitments are typically structured, not part of the official notification. Confirm current trends with the hiring office. NICL’s Assistant recruitment is broadly similar in format (two-stage online exam plus a regional language test) to recruitments run by other public sector general insurers and by IBPS for bank clerks, and typically draws a large number of applicants because of the job security and Metro-level starting salary.

Important Dates

Registration opens on 18 July 2026. Candidates should not wait until the last date to apply, since the notification itself warns that heavy website traffic near the deadline can cause login failures.

Vacancy Details and Salary NICL

NICL has not divided this recruitment by discipline. Instead, the 500 posts are divided State/UT-wise, since selection for the Assistant post is done separately for each State/UT and requires passing a Regional Language Test for that state’s language. The full state-wise, category-wise breakdown from the notification is given below.

These backlog and disability sub-splits are already included inside each state’s total above; candidates applying under PwBD or Ex-Servicemen category should check the exact sub-category count for their state in the official PDF before applying.

Selection Process

Selection happens in three stages: an online Preliminary exam, an online Main exam, and a Regional Language Test. Only candidates who clear each stage move to the next one.

  1. Phase I — Preliminary Examination (online): 100 marks, 60 minutes, in 3 separately-timed sections — English Language (30 questions/30 marks/20 minutes), Reasoning Ability (35/35/20 minutes), and Quantitative Aptitude (35/35/20 minutes). Roughly 15 times the number of vacancies (state-wise and category-wise) are shortlisted for the Main exam.
  2. Phase II — Main Examination (online): 200 marks, 120 minutes, in 5 separately-timed sections — Reasoning (40/40/30 min), English Language (40/40/30 min), Numerical Ability (40/40/30 min), General Awareness (40/40/15 min), and Computer Knowledge (40/40/15 min).
  3. Regional Language Test: Qualifying in nature only, no marks awarded. Candidates applying for a State/UT outside their domiciled state must qualify in that state’s regional language.

There is a penalty of one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question for every wrong answer in both the Preliminary and Main exams; no marks are deducted for unattempted questions. The final merit list is prepared state-wise and category-wise, based on Main exam marks, subject to qualifying the Regional Language Test.

One practical note from the notification: biometric data (thumb impression), IRIS scan, and photograph are captured on the day of the Main Examination for candidates who clear the Preliminary stage, so candidates should keep their fingers clean and dry and avoid contact lenses or eye makeup on that day.

Application Fee

Payable online between 18 July 2026 and 07 August 2026.

  • SC / ST / PwBD / Ex-Servicemen: Nil
  • All other candidates: Rs. 850 (including intimation charges)

Bank transaction charges, if any, are to be borne by the candidate. Fees once paid are not refunded or adjusted against any future recruitment.

Should You Apply?

This vacancy suits graduates in any discipline who want a stable, pensionable-style government job with a Metro-level starting salary of about Rs. 53,000 a month, plus medical and travel benefits. It particularly suits candidates who are comfortable with the regional language of the State/UT they plan to apply under, since the Regional Language Test is compulsory and disqualifying if failed.

It may not suit candidates looking for a technical or specialist insurance role — this is a general clerical Assistant post, and career growth within it depends on internal promotion exams over time, not a fast-track technical path. Competition will vary sharply by state: applying in a high-vacancy state like Maharashtra (57 posts) or Tamil Nadu (49 posts) gives more seats to compete for than a low-vacancy state like Nagaland or Sikkim (1 post each).

One honest trade-off: the initial posting is within the applied State/UT, but the company reserves the right to transfer selected candidates anywhere in India even before completing five years at the first posting. Candidates who value staying in one location long-term should weigh this before applying.

FAQs

Can a candidate apply for more than one State/UT?

No. The notification is clear that a candidate can apply for only one State/UT. If a candidate submits multiple registrations, only the last one is retained, and the fee paid for earlier ones is forfeited.

Is there a fixed number of posts for each discipline within the Assistant role?

No. This is a single post — Assistant — and vacancies are divided by State/UT and reservation category, not by discipline or specialisation, as shown in the vacancy table above.

What happens if a candidate fails the Regional Language Test?

The Regional Language Test is qualifying in nature. A candidate who is not found proficient in the regional language of the State/UT applied for will be disqualified from the recruitment, regardless of their score in the Main Examination.
