About NESAC
NESAC is an autonomous body under the Department of Space, Government of India, set up to support development in the North Eastern Region through space science and technology. It runs projects in remote sensing, GIS, and satellite communication, and carries out research in space atmospheric science. Its work feeds into natural resource management, infrastructure planning, town planning, health, education, disaster management, and earth observation. For a candidate, this means a chance to work on applied, mission-linked research rather than only academic research.

NESAC, Umiam, Meghalaya
NESAC’s campus is at Umiam, Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya — 85 km from Guwahati Railway Station and 18 km before Shillong. Candidates travelling from Guwahati typically use the Guwahati–Shillong highway.
This is added context based on general road distance, not part of the official notification. Confirm exact travel time with local transport before the interview.
The region has other established institutions in similar fields — IIT Guwahati, Gauhati University, and North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong — though none of these are affiliated with NESAC or this recruitment. Selected Project Associates and JRFs may also be posted at Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya. One useful detail from the notification: candidates have the option to answer interview questions in Hindi as well as English, which may help candidates from outside the North East who are more comfortable in Hindi.
Important Dates
There is no fixed “last date to apply” here since this is a walk-in interview — candidates simply show up on the date assigned to their post code.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Notification released | 17 July 2026 |
| Walk-in interview — Day 1 | 10 August 2026 |
| Walk-in interview — Day 2 | 11 August 2026 |

Selection Process
Selection for all 16 posts is based purely on performance in the walk-in interview — NESAC does not conduct a separate written test of its own. For JRF01–JRF07, a valid NET/GATE/JAM/JEST-JGEEBILS/AICE score is a prerequisite to even be considered, but meeting the minimum qualification does not automatically guarantee an interview call.
- Candidate reports to the venue on the assigned date with biodata and original documents.
- Documents are checked, including a “No Objection Certificate” for candidates already working in Central/State Government, PSUs, or autonomous bodies.
- Interview is conducted; selection is based entirely on interview performance.
One practical point from the notification: no TA/DA (travel allowance) is paid for attending the interview, and candidates must arrange and pay for their own stay if the interview runs beyond office hours or into the next day.
How to Apply
This is a walk-in interview — there is no online application form. To apply, candidates must:
- Download the prescribed Biodata format from the NESAC career page (link below).
- Type the biodata neatly in the prescribed format — handwritten biodata will not be accepted.
- Print the biodata.
- Report directly to NESAC, Umiam, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya, on the interview date assigned to the relevant post code (85 km from Guwahati Railway Station, 18 km before Shillong).
- Carry the printed biodata, all original documents supporting the details in the biodata, and one set of self-attested photocopies.
- Candidates already employed with Central/State Government, PSUs, or autonomous bodies must also carry an original “No Objection Certificate.”
- Candidates applying for more than one post must submit a separate biodata for each post.
Documents to keep ready:
- Typed and printed Biodata (prescribed NESAC format)
- Original degree certificates and mark sheets supporting the biodata
- One set of self-attested photocopies of all documents
- Original “No Objection Certificate” (only if currently employed in government/PSU/autonomous body)
- Government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, Passport, etc.)
- NET/GATE/JAM/JEST-JGEEBILS/AICE score card with qualifying year (for JRF01–JRF07)
- Proof of specialisation/dissertation/thesis where the post requires it
- For foreign degrees: English translation, authorised transcription, and an AIU equivalency certificate

Should You Apply?
This suits candidates in geosciences, remote sensing, GIS, atmospheric science, environmental science, disaster management, or computer science who want hands-on research experience with a Department of Space institution, and who are comfortable with a temporary, project-linked role rather than a permanent government job. Research Scientist and JRF posts have no provision for regularisation — Research Scientist positions run for up to 3 years, JRF and Project Associate-I up to 5 years, all co-terminus with the project.
This next point is added context, not part of the official notification: with only one vacancy per post code across many overlapping disciplines (geology, RS/GIS, atmospheric science, computer science), competition for each individual post is likely to be significant, especially from candidates across the North East and the rest of India with NET/GATE qualifications. Confirm current interest levels are not something NESAC publishes.
The honest trade-off: pay (₹31,000–₹56,100/month) is modest against private-sector data science or GIS roles, and the location is remote for candidates outside the North East. In return, candidates get DOS-linked project experience, and JRFs are encouraged to register for a Ph.D. alongside their fellowship.
FAQs
Can I apply for more than one post at NESAC?
Yes. Candidates interested in more than one post must submit a separate biodata for each post they are applying for, and carry all relevant documents for each post to the interview.
Is there an application fee for NESAC Recruitment 2026?
Application fee details are not mentioned in the official notification. Candidates should check the official NESAC website for any updates before the interview date.
Can I attend the walk-in interview if my final semester result is still awaited?
No. Only candidates who have already passed and hold the required qualification as on the date of interview can attend. Students awaiting their final result should not appear.
