North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), Umiam, released this recruitment notice on 17 July 2026 on its official website. As per Notice No. NESAC/RMT-TEMP/WI-02/2026, NESAC will hold walk-in interviews on 10, 11, and 12 August 2026 for temporary, project-based posts. Research Scientist (5 posts) — Monthly pay: ₹56,100 + applicable DA, HRA, and medical benefits (self only)

Junior Research Fellow — JRF (10 posts) — Monthly fellowship: ₹37,000 + HRA (as applicable) + medical benefits (self only)

Project Associate-I (1 post) — Monthly emoluments: ₹31,000 + HRA (as applicable) + medical benefits (self only)

Verified total: 5 (Research Scientist) + 10 (JRF) + 1 (Project Associate-I) = 16 posts.

Category-wise (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) vacancy split for individual posts is not mentioned in the official notification — only general age relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/Ex-servicemen/PwD candidates is given (see Eligibility below).

Eligibility (Post-Wise)

Qualifications differ by post, so they are mapped individually below. All qualifying degrees must be from a university recognised by AICTE/UGC or an equivalent Government of India authority.

General minimum aggregate marks (applies across all posts):

• M.E./M.Tech degree: minimum 60% aggregate (average of all semesters) or CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale.
• B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc degree: minimum 65% aggregate or CGPA/CPI of 6.84 on a 10-point scale.

Research Scientist — Age limit: 28 years (M.Sc-based) / 30 years (M.Tech-based), as on date of interview

• RS01 (Geo-hazards): First Class M.Sc./M.Tech/M.Sc(Tech) in Geology/Applied Geology/Geophysics/Earth Science (or Integrated M.Sc in Geology/Applied Geology), plus a Ph.D in a relevant field (with B.Sc Geology as main subject as a pre-qualification, not applicable for the integrated route), plus 1 year of research/work experience in Geo-hazards. Desired: work on groundwater depletion, landslide early warning, GPS/GNSS, seismic survey data processing, RS and GIS use.
• RS02 (Computer Science/IT): First Class M.E./M.Tech AND First Class B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering/IT, plus 1 year of research/work experience in the same field. Desired: GIS and RS, geospatial analytics, Python/JavaScript, PostGIS, GeoServer, AI/ML, satellite/drone image processing, cloud geospatial services, web/mobile app development.
• RS03 (Disaster Management): First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Disaster Management/Geography/Applied Geography/Geology/Geoinformatics/Geomatics/RS & GIS, plus 1 year of research/work experience in Disaster Management Support (DMS). Desired: Ph.D in a relevant field, working experience in disaster-related studies, RS data handling, GIS software, programming skills, and experience preparing Disaster Management Plans.
• RS04 (Geoinformatics): First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Botany/Forestry/Environmental Science/RS/Geoinformatics/Chemistry/Physics/Computer Science AND a Graduation degree in Science, plus 1 year of research/work experience in Geoinformatics. Desired: Ph.D in a relevant field, RS data handling, GIS software, Python/MATLAB programming, ecological/environmental modelling, forest fire studies.
• RS05 (Atmospheric Science): First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Physics/Meteorology/Atmospheric Science/Earth Systems Science, plus 1 year of research/work experience in any field of Atmospheric Science. Desired: Ph.D in a relevant field, Satellite Meteorology, Thunderstorm/Lightning study, Numerical Weather Prediction models, MATLAB/FORTRAN programming, working knowledge of LINUX.

Junior Research Fellow (JRF) — Age limit: 28 years, as on date of interview

• JRF01: First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Forestry/Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering/Life Science/RS & GIS/Geoinformatics/CSE/Earth System Science/Chemical Engineering, WITH valid NET/GATE (or equivalent, see list below) AND a Bachelor’s degree in Science. Desired: RS/atmospheric data handling, GIS analysis, GEE, Python.
• JRF02: First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Physics/Atmospheric Science/Applied Physics/Earth System Science/Chemistry/Environmental Science/Environmental Engineering, WITH valid NET/GATE AND a Bachelor’s degree in Science. Desired: same as JRF01.
• JRF03: M.Sc in Physics/Electronics/Meteorology/Earth Sciences/Atmospheric Sciences WITH NET/GATE, OR B.Tech in Physics/ECE/EEE WITH NET/GATE, OR M.Tech in Physics/ECE/EEE WITH NET/GATE. Desired: knowledge of atmospheric phenomena.
• JRF04: First Class B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science & Engineering/IT WITH valid NET/GATE. Desired: experience building apps, web portals, and AI/ML/DL-based applications.
• JRF05: First Class B.E./B.Tech in CSE/IT WITH NET/GATE, OR First Class M.Tech/M.Sc in Remote Sensing, GIS and Geoinformatics WITH NET/GATE. Desired: same as JRF04.
• JRF06: First Class M.Sc./M.Tech in Forestry/Ecology/Environmental Sciences/Botany/Life Science/Earth System Science/RS & GIS/Geoinformatics WITH valid NET/GATE. Desired: processing RS and GIS datasets/software, good knowledge of Python/R/MATLAB/GEE.
• JRF07: Same qualification base as JRF06, WITH valid NET/GATE. Desired: SAR data processing, GIS analysis, programming in Python/R/GEE.
• JRF08: First Class M.E./M.Tech in Earth Science Engineering/Water Resources Engineering/RS & GIS/Computer Science, with a dissertation/specialisation in soil moisture applications, land-surface modelling, or SAR data, WITH NET/GATE, OR First Class M.Sc in RS & GIS/Geology/Environmental Science with a related dissertation, WITH NET/GATE. Desired: SAR data processing, soil moisture use in hydrological/land-surface modelling, Python/FORTRAN, LINUX.
• JRF09: M.Sc/M.Tech in Geology/Applied Geology/Geophysics/Physics/Applied Physics/Earth Science/Earth System Science/Geological Sciences, OR B.Tech/M.Tech in CSE with SAR data processing experience, WITH valid NET/GATE. Desired: SAR data processing for InSAR/POLInSAR applications, morphotectonic and seismotectonic analysis, Python and other programming languages.
• JRF10: M.Sc in Geological Sciences (or equivalent) from a recognised university, WITH valid NET/GATE. Desired: specialisation in remote sensing geology, geo-hazards, landslides, or SAR data processing, plus programming skills.

Qualifying tests accepted for JRF01–JRF07 (any one, with score card and qualifying year required at interview): CSIR-UGC NET (including NET-Lectureship/Assistant Professorship), GATE (conducted by MHRD/MoE), JAM (conducted by MHRD/MoE), JEST or JGEEBILS (conducted by Department of Atomic Energy), and AICE (conducted by ICAR).

Project Associate-I — Age limit: 35 years, as on date of interview

• PA01: First Class M.Sc. in Botany/Forestry/Environmental Science, plus minimum 1 year of experience in plant identification. Desired: specialisation in Plant Taxonomy, working knowledge of RS data handling and GIS analysis.

Age relaxation: 5 years for SC/ST candidates, 3 years for OBC candidates. Ex-servicemen and Persons with Disabilities get age relaxation as per Government of India orders. Valid documentary proof is required to claim any relaxation.

Selection Process

Selection for all 16 posts is based purely on performance in the walk-in interview — NESAC does not conduct a separate written test of its own. For JRF01–JRF07, a valid NET/GATE/JAM/JEST-JGEEBILS/AICE score is a prerequisite to even be considered, but meeting the minimum qualification does not automatically guarantee an interview call.

1. Candidate reports to the venue on the assigned date with biodata and original documents.
2. Documents are checked, including a “No Objection Certificate” for candidates already working in Central/State Government, PSUs, or autonomous bodies.
3. Interview is conducted; selection is based entirely on interview performance.

One practical point from the notification: no TA/DA (travel allowance) is paid for attending the interview, and candidates must arrange and pay for their own stay if the interview runs beyond office hours or into the next day.

How to Apply

This is a walk-in interview — there is no online application form. To apply, candidates must:

1. Download the prescribed Biodata format from the NESAC career page (link below).
2. Type the biodata neatly in the prescribed format — handwritten biodata will not be accepted.
3. Print the biodata.
4. Report directly to NESAC, Umiam, Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya, on the interview date assigned to the relevant post code (85 km from Guwahati Railway Station, 18 km before Shillong).
5. Carry the printed biodata, all original documents supporting the details in the biodata, and one set of self-attested photocopies.
6. Candidates already employed with Central/State Government, PSUs, or autonomous bodies must also carry an original “No Objection Certificate.”
7. Candidates applying for more than one post must submit a separate biodata for each post.

Should You Apply?

This suits candidates in geosciences, remote sensing, GIS, atmospheric science, environmental science, disaster management, or computer science who want hands-on research experience with a Department of Space institution, and who are comfortable with a temporary, project-linked role rather than a permanent government job. Research Scientist and JRF posts have no provision for regularisation — Research Scientist positions run for up to 3 years, JRF and Project Associate-I up to 5 years, all co-terminus with the project.

This next point is added context, not part of the official notification: with only one vacancy per post code across many overlapping disciplines (geology, RS/GIS, atmospheric science, computer science), competition for each individual post is likely to be significant, especially from candidates across the North East and the rest of India with NET/GATE qualifications. Confirm current interest levels are not something NESAC publishes.

The honest trade-off: pay (₹31,000–₹56,100/month) is modest against private-sector data science or GIS roles, and the location is remote for candidates outside the North East. In return, candidates get DOS-linked project experience, and JRFs are encouraged to register for a Ph.D. alongside their fellowship.
