Local context

Kolkata, where the University of Calcutta is based, is well connected by rail and air to other parts of West Bengal and the North East. Candidates from Siliguri, Darjeeling and other parts of North Bengal can reach the city by train or flight. Kolkata also has other technical institutions nearby, including IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University, which work on electronics and computing research. A MeitY-funded quantum computing project through the University of Calcutta is a less common opportunity in this region, since most quantum computing research posts in India are concentrated at institutes like IISc Bangalore and the IITs. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. Candidates can check other current openings on the West Bengal Jobs category page.

Senior Research Fellow (SRF)

The qualification is the same as JRF: B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc or MCA in a relevant discipline. Candidates also need two years of relevant research experience.

Knowledge of quantum computing, QEC-QEM, noise modelling, Qiskit, Qiskit Dynamics, FragQC, quantum compiler, transpilation, mapping and scheduling, BQSKit, hardware-aware computing considering decoherence and fidelity, Python and C++ is desirable.

Project Engineer

Candidates need a B.Tech or M.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, IT, Electronics or Electrical Engineering or an allied discipline.

Experience in software architecture, module integration, quantum software, compiler or toolchain development, Python, C++, Linux and HPC is desirable. Experience in quantum computing or QEC-QEM is also desirable.

Meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee selection. The university has said it will prefer candidates with relevant research or project experience, publications and practical expertise.

Selection process

Selection for these posts follows two stages.

  1. Screening of applications against the qualifications and experience listed for each post.

Should you apply?

These posts suit candidates from a computer science, electronics or electrical engineering background who already have some exposure to quantum computing, Python or C++. Qiskit knowledge is listed as desirable for every post, so candidates with hands-on project or research experience have an advantage over those who meet only the minimum qualification.

These posts do not suit candidates looking for a permanent government job. The notice states that appointments are temporary and end when the project ends, after three years. There is no confirmed move into a regular university post.

The field is specialised, so competition is likely lower than for a general SSC or PSC exam. Still, the university has said that meeting the minimum qualification alone will not guarantee selection. Candidates get to work on a MeitY-funded quantum computing project, useful experience for anyone considering further research or a PhD in this area. The main trade-off is the lack of long-term job security.
