Selection Process in TNPSC Group 4 Recruitment
The Commission selects candidates through a single written exam. Candidates then move through certificate verification and counselling. Merit depends on total marks in the written exam.
- The written examination on 10 January 2027, an OMR objective paper.
- On-screen certificate verification. Candidates get 10 calendar days to upload documents.
- Physical Standards Test and Endurance Test, for Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher only. It is held in Chennai only. Male candidates walk 25 km and female and third gender candidates walk 16 km, each in four hours.
- Physical certificate verification and counselling, in rank order.
A candidate who misses the certificate verification or counselling date gets no second chance. The post chosen at counselling cannot be changed.
Candidates called at each stage
The Commission shortlists TNPSC Group 4 recruitment candidates for on-screen certificate verification at 1:3 (general) and 1:2 (reserved). This covers Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Typist and Steno Typist posts. The ratio is 1:6 for all categories for Forest Guard and Forest Watcher posts. Candidates for the Endurance Test are called in the ratio of 1:3.
| Posts | General | Reserved |
|---|---|---|
| Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Steno Typist, Grade III | 1:3 | 1:1.5 |
| Typist | 1:3 | 1:2 |
| Forest Guard with Driving Licence | 1:1.2 | 1:1.1 |
| Forest Watcher | 1:3 | 1:2 |
Ties in total marks go to the candidate with the higher qualification. For Typist posts, higher typewriting qualification comes first. For Steno Typist posts, higher shorthand qualification comes first. The Commission then looks at age, with the older candidate ranked higher. Application number is the last tie-breaker.
For typing and shorthand posts, candidates with Higher or Senior Grade in both Tamil and English are selected first. The fallback grade order differs by post. The Police Housing Corporation Typist post (3817) follows its own order.
Exam pattern
The TNPSC Group 4 recruitment exam is one paper of three hours. The Commission sets Part A in Tamil only. Parts B and C appear in Tamil and English. Candidates need 90 marks out of 300 for all communities.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (SSLC) | 100 | 150 |
| B | General Studies (SSLC) | 75 | 150 for B and C together |
| C | Aptitude and Mental Ability (SSLC) | 25 | |
| Total | 200 | 300 |
Part A of the TNPSC Group 4 recruitment paper works as a gate. The Commission checks Parts B and C only for candidates who score 40% (60 marks) in Part A. Ranking uses the total marks in all three parts. Differently abled candidates who studied English only can take General English (SSLC standard) instead of the Tamil test. They must score 60 marks in it and upload the disability certificate with the application.

Accepted IDs are Aadhaar, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN and Voter ID. Phones, smartwatches, rings and glasses with memory, books, notes, bags and wallets are banned. The OMR sheet needs the candidate’s signature and left thumb impression. A missing thumb impression costs 0.5 marks. Should You Apply?
The TNPSC Group 4 recruitment suits candidates who read Tamil at SSLC level. It offers Tamil Nadu Government jobs in clerical, typing, revenue and forest work. SSLC pass candidates can apply for the largest group of posts, so competition there will be the heaviest. Graduate and technical posts draw fewer eligible candidates, since they need a degree or typewriting and shorthand grades.
A candidate who scores below 60 marks in Part A has no Part B or Part C answers checked. The Commission calls its vacancy counts tentative. Candidates from outside Tamil Nadu get no community concessions. Some corporation posts carry a provident fund (EPF), while the Junior Assistant post (3788) can mean a posting anywhere in India. Candidates can browse more government job notifications on the site before choosing posts.

FAQs
What is the last date to apply for TNPSC Group 4 recruitment 2026?
The last date is 5 November 2026, 11:59 PM. Candidates apply online at tnpscexams.in. The correction window opens from 9 November 2026 to 11 November 2026, when candidates can edit application details. The Commission allows no changes after that.
Can 10th pass candidates apply for Group 4 posts?
Yes. Many posts in TNPSC Group 4 recruitment need only an SSLC pass. Examples are Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Revenue Assistant, Tax Collector and Record Clerk. Typist, Steno Typist and some Junior Assistant posts need typewriting grades or a degree, so candidates should check the post-wise tables.
What is the qualifying mark in the Group 4 exam?
The minimum qualifying mark is 90 out of 300 for all communities. The Commission checks Parts B and C only if a candidate scores at least 60 marks in Part A (the Tamil test). Ranking uses total marks across all three parts.
Can candidates from other states apply for TNPSC Group 4?
Candidates need adequate knowledge of Tamil. Community concessions apply only to candidates who belong to Tamil Nadu. Candidates from other states should read the other age limits and fee rules before applying for TNPSC Group 4 recruitment.
