According to LIC’s own office directory for this scheme, Darjeeling, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, the Dooars (Malbazar) and Islampur all fall under LIC’s Jalpaiguri Divisional Office, which also covers Gangtok in Sikkim. This means candidates applying from anywhere in this belt are effectively competing for the same fixed pool of seats — 80 General and 40 Special — allotted to the Jalpaiguri Division, alongside applicants from Coochbihar, Alipurduar, Balurghat, Malda and the rest of that Division’s area.

Eligibility

General Scholarship (after Class 12th / Diploma)

• Passed Class XII exam or its equivalent, with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA, in the academic year 2023-24, 2024-25 or 2025-26.
• Taken admission in the academic year 2026-27 for the first year of a degree course in Medicine (MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BDS), Engineering (BE, BTech, BArch), Graduation in any discipline, Integrated Courses, Diploma in any field, Vocational Courses through Government-recognised colleges/institutes, or courses in ITIs.
• Parents’ or guardian’s annual income, from all sources, not exceeding ₹4,50,000.

Special Scholarship (after Class 10th)

• Passed Class X exam or its equivalent, with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA, in the academic year 2023-24, 2024-25 or 2025-26.
• Taken admission in the academic year 2026-27 for the first year of Intermediate/10+2, Vocational or Diploma courses through Government-recognised colleges/institutions or ITIs.
• Parents’ or guardian’s annual income, from all sources, not exceeding ₹4,50,000.

The scholarship is not meant for post-graduation studies. Integrated courses that combine Graduation and Post Graduation are an exception and remain eligible for the full course duration.

Scholarship amount and payment schedule

General Scholarship

Special Scholarship

The scholarship runs for the entire duration of the course, excluding any internship or stipendiary period, subject to the candidate meeting the renewal conditions each year. These rates apply to new entrants; candidates already receiving the scholarship from an earlier year continue at the rate fixed at their original selection.

The 1st instalment becomes due on selection, and the 2nd instalment is claimed by submitting the 1st semester result or, where the institute does not follow a semester pattern, an attendance certificate along with a declaration to that effect. The amount is transferred by NEFT to the scholar’s bank account. Candidates should note:

• The bank account and IFSC code must be provided along with a cancelled cheque bearing the beneficiary’s name.
• If the bank has merged with another, the new IFSC code must be used.
• The account must be active — a dormant account has to be activated before submitting details.
• Candidates should also check the maximum balance limit allowed on their account type.

Number of scholarships

Gender slots are interchangeable if one category runs short within a Division. If a Division has a shortfall after baseline selection, its vacant slots are pooled centrally and offered to Divisions that hold a waiting list, up to the overall limit of 8,960 General and 4,480 Special scholarships, based on centralised ranking.

Selection process

1. Routing. The online application is automatically routed to one of LIC’s 112 Divisions, based on the applicant’s address PIN code.
2. Ranking. Applicants with parental income between ₹0 and ₹4,50,000 are ranked strictly by academic merit — percentage in Class 12th or 10th, as applicable — within their Division.
3. Selection. Each Division selects from the top of its ranked list, to the extent of its vacancies, and starts a waiting list once the baseline seats are filled if eligible candidates remain.
4. Intimation. Selected candidates are informed by email.
5. Document verification. Divisional officials physically verify marks and income documents. A copy authenticated by any LIC branch in-charge is also accepted.
6. Disbursal. The scholarship is credited to the verified bank account by NEFT.

Tie-break order: if candidates are tied on percentage of marks, preference goes to the one whose parents have the lower income. If income is also tied, LIC officials decide based on a financial assessment of the candidate’s needs and family background. Where the tie is only in marks, a candidate not already receiving any other scholarship is preferred over one who is.

Conditions candidates must know

Who is not eligible:

• Candidates pursuing a course through Correspondence, Part-Time (evening or night classes), or an Open University.
• Candidates in self-study courses such as CA, CS or Cost Accountant (ICMAI).
• Candidates already receiving a scholarship from another Trust or Institution — this restriction does not apply to a Government (state or central) scholarship, whether it started before or after selection for this scheme.

Family rule: as a rule, the scholarship goes to only one student per family. This may be relaxed to allow a second scholar from the same family if the later applicant is a female, or if both applicants are female.

Special entry cases: a candidate who takes lateral entry into 2nd Year Engineering, or regular 1st Year Engineering admission after a Diploma, remains eligible provided the Diploma was passed with 60% (or equivalent CGPA) in 2023-24, 2024-25 or 2025-26. If a selected scholar switches academic stream, the scholarship continues only for the shorter of the original or new course duration.

To continue receiving the scholarship each year (renewal):

A candidate who clears any subject with grace marks, or clears a previously failed subject in a later semester, becomes ineligible for continuation — even if the overall percentage or CGPA still meets the cut-off. The only exception is a candidate who could not appear for an exam due to extreme or unavoidable circumstances beyond their control, and who submits a formal representation with verification and recommendation from the competent authority.

Ongoing compliance: scholars must maintain regular class attendance as set by their school, college or university. Anyone changing school or college must immediately inform the Divisional Office and submit their School/College Leaving Certificate or Transfer/Migration Certificate along with the mark sheet and grade card. Claims for arrears will not be accepted if made more than 12 months after the end of the academic year they relate to. Violating the terms can lead to suspension or cancellation, and a scholarship obtained through false statements or certificates is cancelled with recovery of the amount paid, at LIC’s discretion.

Documents and declarations required

• Income certificate issued by a competent Revenue Authority — Tehsildar, District Magistrate, Deputy Commissioner, Collector, Revenue Circle Officer, Sub Divisional Magistrate, or a designated Panchayat/Municipality officer — stating the annual gross income of both parents, from all sources including agricultural income, for the preceding financial year. An income certificate issued earlier but still valid for that financial year is accepted.
• Mark sheet of the qualifying Class X, XII or Diploma exam.
• Proof of first-year admission for 2026-27.
• Bank account details, IFSC code, and a cancelled cheque with the beneficiary’s name.
• PAN and e-Aadhaar card numbers. Candidates must give LIC Golden Jubilee Foundation irrevocable authorisation to use the submitted data, including PAN and Aadhaar, to process the application.

This scholarship suits a Class 10 or Class 12 pass student from a low-income family who has just secured a 2026-27 first-year admission and can show at least 60% marks. It particularly fits Medicine and Engineering aspirants, since those streams carry the highest annual amounts. It is not a fit for anyone in a correspondence, part-time, Open University or self-study course such as CA or CS — the notice rules these out entirely.

Competition is real: each LIC Division selects only 120 students in total, split across both categories and both genders, from every eligible applicant in that Division’s area. A student from a smaller Division with fewer applicants may have better odds than one from a large, high-applicant Division — but the notice gives no per-Division applicant numbers, so this cannot be predicted in advance. Renewal is not automatic either — the yearly percentage cut-offs, and the grace-marks disqualification in particular, catch students who assume a pass is enough.
