About Rashtriya Military Schools
Rashtriya Military Schools are English-medium residential public schools run by the Ministry of Defence. They are founding members of the Indian Public Schools’ Conference and were established in 1925, making them among the oldest public schools in India. All five schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. They prepare students for the CBSE Class X and Class XII board exams, and for the Union Public Service Commission exam for entry to the National Defence Academy. The academic year runs from April to March, and science is offered only after Class 10.
Course-wise seats

Eligibility
Class VI
Candidates must be 10 to 13 years old as on 31 March 2027, born between 1 April 2014 and 31 March 2017. They must have passed Class V, or be studying in Class V and pass it before the date of admission. Knowledge of English is preferred, since it is the medium of instruction.
Class IX
Candidates must be 13 to 16 years old as on 31 March 2027, born between 1 April 2011 and 31 March 2014. They must have passed Class VIII from a government or recognised school before the date of admission.
A relaxation of six months in the upper age limit applies to wards of personnel killed in action. The date of birth certificate must be issued by a Municipal Corporation or another authorised local government body. Certificates from a Gram Panchayat are not accepted, and any mismatch between the date of birth and the school leaving certificate cancels the candidature.

Reservation
Seats are reserved by category: 70% for wards of serving or retired JCOs and Other Ranks of the Army, Navy and Air Force (Entitled Category), 20% for wards of officers, and 10% for civilians. Within these, Government of India reservation applies: OBC-NCL 27%, SC 15%, and ST 7.5%. A total of 50 seats, with not more than 15 in any one school, are reserved for wards of personnel killed in action. Girls get 10% of seats or a maximum of 30, whichever is less, for Class VI, and 10% for Class IX, both counted across all five schools together.
Selection process
Selection runs through four stages. NTA conducts Stage-I, the written exam, and RMS conducts the rest.
- Stage-I: Written exam. OMR-based, with no negative marking.
- Stage-II: Medical. Qualified candidates are examined at a nominated Military or Command Hospital, chosen by the candidate during registration.
- Stage-III: Interview. Held at one of the five RMS. It carries 20 marks for Class VI and 50 marks for Class IX, and candidates must score at least 50% in the interview to pass it.
- Stage-IV: Final merit. Written and interview marks are added, and a category-wise merit list decides admission and school allotment, based on available vacancies.
Written exam pattern
Class VI: English (50 marks, candidates must qualify with 35%, but these marks do not count towards the merit list), Intelligence Test (50 marks, 40% to qualify), Mathematics (50 marks, 40% to qualify), and General Knowledge & Current Affairs (50 marks, 40% to qualify). The duration is 2 hours 30 minutes for all four subjects together.
Class IX: Paper 1 covers English (50), Hindi (20) and Social Science (30), for 100 marks with 50% needed to qualify. Paper 2 covers Mathematics (50) and Science (50), also 100 marks with 50% needed to qualify. Duration is 2 hours 30 minutes.
The written test is generally of Class V standard for Class VI admission, and Class VIII standard for Class IX admission. The question paper is bilingual, in English and Hindi, for Class VI, and in English only for Class IX.

How to apply
- Register at exams.nta.nic.in/RMSCET/ using a personal email ID and mobile number, verified by OTP.
- Fill the online application form with the candidate’s name, date of birth and category exactly as they appear in school records, since these fields cannot be changed later.
- Upload a recent colour photograph, a scanned signature, and a left-hand thumb impression, each in the file size and format the portal specifies.
- Upload the date of birth certificate and domicile certificate. A domicile certificate of a parent may be used if the candidate does not have one. Upload the SC/ST certificate if applying under that category, and a service certificate if applicable.
- Pay the application fee by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI, and download the Confirmation Page once payment is confirmed.
