Darjeeling Hills University Admission 2026-27 – Apply by 28 July

Darjeeling Hills University released this postgraduate admission notification on 15 July 2026 on its official website. As per Reference No. DHU/RGR/N-1 (A-3)/2026/07/181, online applications for the Direct Admission process open on 16 July 2026 and close on 28 July 2026, for entry to the first semester of postgraduate programmes for the 2026–2027 session. This is for candidates who have completed their graduation and want a postgraduate seat at a university based in the Darjeeling hills.

About the University

Darjeeling Hills University is a public university based at Bhasmey, Mungpoo, in Darjeeling district, West Bengal. Its administrative office functions under the Office of the Registrar, currently headed by Dr. Sujata Rani Rai (Registrar, Additional Charge). The university offers postgraduate programmes across humanities, social sciences, and science disciplines, including English, History, Mass Communication, Mathematics, Nepali and Himalayan Studies, and Political Science. For a candidate from the Darjeeling hills or North Bengal, it offers a postgraduate option without having to travel to Kolkata or outside the state.

The university campus sits in Mungpoo, a small hill town in Darjeeling district. Mungpoo is about 25–33 km from Darjeeling town, roughly an hour by road. It is about 51–57 km from Siliguri and around 52–60 km from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station, a journey of about two to two-and-a-half hours by taxi along NH10. Bagdogra Airport, the nearest airport, is about 60–66 km away. This travel context is added information based on general road-distance data for Mungpoo, not part of the official notification. Candidates should confirm exact routes and travel time with local operators closer to the admission dates.

Candidates from Kalimpong (about 39–42 km) and other parts of the Darjeeling hills will find the campus relatively easier to reach than those coming from the plains. For candidates outside West Bengal, the nearest railway and air links are NJP and Bagdogra, both near Siliguri, followed by a hill road to Mungpoo.

Important Dates

The university has published a detailed 17-point schedule covering both admission routes — Direct Admission and the Darjeeling Hills University Entrance Examination (for seats left after Direct Admission).

Timing note: the notification specifies that fee payment at every stage must be completed by 11:00 PM of the applicable last date. Classes for the first semester begin on 1 August 2026 — the same day as physical document verification for Direct Admission admits — so candidates confirmed in the earlier merit lists should be ready to report and verify documents around this date.

Programmes Offered

The notification lists six postgraduate programmes for the 2026–2027 session. All six are open under Direct Admission. If seats remain after Direct Admission, they go to the Entrance Examination process, which is held on one of two dates depending on the programme.

Seat intake per programme is not mentioned in the official notification. The notification also states that the Entrance Examination will be cancelled altogether for any programme where all seats get filled through Direct Admission itself.

Eligibility

The notification directs candidates to the detailed eligibility criteria published separately on the Admissions 2026 page of the university website (accessed via the QR code in the notification, or directly at the admissions portal). Programme-wise eligibility, intake capacity, and fee structure are not reproduced in the notification itself — candidates must check the detailed eligibility document on the website before applying.

What the notification does confirm:

• Candidates need their graduation marksheets ready, since CGPA and Percentage are both used for merit list preparation.
• Higher Secondary and Secondary (or equivalent) examination percentages matter even after graduation, because they are used in the tie-breaker process (see Selection Process below).

Selection Process

Admission runs through two stages, in order: Direct Admission first, then the Entrance Examination for whatever seats remain.

1. Merit-based Direct Admission. A Combined Merit List is published on 31 July 2026, based on CGPA and percentage in the qualifying examination. This is followed by three rounds of programme-wise merit lists (First, Second, Third), each with its own fee-payment window.
2. Seat confirmation. A candidate whose name appears in a merit list must pay the admission fee within the given window to confirm the seat. Missing the window means the candidate is dropped from all later lists — there is no carry-forward.
3. Waitlist movement. Any seat that becomes vacant due to a cancellation is filled from the waiting list, strictly in order of merit.
4. Document verification. Physical verification of original documents happens on 1 August 2026 for Direct Admission admits. Admission is cancelled if documents do not match the online declarations.
5. Entrance Examination for remaining seats. If a programme still has vacant seats after Direct Admission, those seats go to the Entrance Examination route — a separate application (14–21 August 2026), a written exam (24–25 August 2026), and its own merit list and verification process (27–31 August 2026).

Tie-breaker order, in case two candidates end up with the same CGPA/percentage: Higher Secondary (or equivalent) percentage is checked first; if still tied, Secondary (or equivalent) percentage is checked next; if it remains tied even after that, the older candidate is given preference.

Practical note: candidates admitted through the Entrance Examination route are separately assured of remedial classes for all programmes and courses — a support measure not offered as a standing note for Direct Admission admits in this notification.

Application Fee

The processing fee for this admission cycle is Nil for every category — General (UR), EWS, SC, ST, OBC, PWD, and AAY.

How to Apply

The process runs entirely online, in five stages, as described in the university’s General Instructions:

1. Go to the DHU Admissions 2026 page and click the online application portal link.
2. Read the prospectus and eligibility details carefully before starting.
3. Register using a mobile number and create a password. The mobile number is verified through OTP; the same password is used for all future logins.
4. Fill in the application form across its sections — Basic Information, Academic Details, Document Upload (photograph, signature, and supporting documents), and a final Preview with Confirmation and Declaration. The form can be saved at any stage and completed after a later login, but once the Preview is confirmed and submitted, it cannot be edited.
5. Download and print the submitted application form, which carries the unique Application ID used to track the candidate through the rest of the process.

Documents to Keep Ready

The General Instructions also list a PAN Card and a BPL Card with Income Certificate among documents that may be needed at different stages. A printer and scanner should be arranged in advance, since a printed copy of the completed application form is required for later verification, and all documents must be scanned in the exact size and format specified before upload — the system will not let the candidate proceed otherwise.
