About the organisation
CSIR-CMERI, established in 1958, is the only national laboratory in India dedicated entirely to mechanical engineering, functioning under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It carries out research in areas such as advanced design, electric mobility, robotics, casting and additive manufacturing, and farm machinery, through its main campus at Durgapur and its Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery at Ludhiana. For a Technician joining here, the role sits inside a functioning national R&D lab rather than a purely administrative government office.

Local context
CSIR-CMERI’s main campus is on Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, Durgapur, in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district. Durgapur is an established industrial town on the Howrah–Asansol rail line and along the Grand Trunk Road, giving it road and rail links to Kolkata, Asansol, and other towns in the region. Bengali is the main local language, with Hindi and English used in official and technical communication. NIT Durgapur, also based in the same city, is a comparable public technical institution nearby. Candidates selected for the Ludhiana extension centre would instead be based in Punjab, at the Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm exact routes, connectivity and timings independently before planning travel.

Selection process
Selection has two stages after an initial screening. Both the Trade Test and the Written Examination must be cleared in sequence.
- Screening — a duly constituted Screening Committee shortlists candidates for the Trade Test based on eligibility.
- Trade Test — qualifying in nature, held in the candidate’s relevant/respective trade.
- Competitive Written Examination — for candidates who qualify the Trade Test. It has three papers totalling 150 questions over 2 hours 30 minutes:
- Paper-I, Mental Ability Test (1 hour): 50 questions, 100 marks, no negative marking.
- Paper-II, General Awareness and English Language (30 minutes): 25+25 questions, 75+75 marks, 1 negative mark per wrong answer in each.
- Paper-III, Concerned Subject (1 hour): 50 questions, 150 marks, 1 negative mark per wrong answer.
- Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only for candidates who clear a minimum threshold in Paper-I, and the final merit list is based on Paper-II and Paper-III marks only.
Questions are set in both English and Hindi, except the English Language paper itself. Candidates will not be reimbursed any Travelling Allowance or Daily Allowance for appearing in the Trade Test or Written Examination.
Application fee
A non-refundable fee of ₹500 is mandatory for applicants other than Ex-Servicemen, SC, ST, Women, and PwBD candidates, who are exempt. The fee must be paid online through SBI Collect only; the e-receipt generated after payment must be downloaded and uploaded with the application. Fee paid through any other mode will not be accepted, and the application will be treated as unpaid and rejected.

Should you apply?
This suits a 10th-pass candidate with a genuine ITI trade certificate (or matching apprentice/work experience) in one of the seven listed trades, who wants a Central Government technical role inside a national R&D institute rather than a private workshop. The pay level and total emoluments are fixed and modest compared to higher government pay levels, but the job carries the usual central government benefits — pension under the National Pension System, medical reimbursement, and Leave Travel Concession.
This is added context, not part of the official notification: with 27 posts spread across seven distinct trades rather than one large common pool, competition is likely to be more concentrated within each trade — Fitter, with 14 posts, is likely to draw the largest applicant pool, while Foundryman, with a single post, is likely to be the most competitive per seat. Confirm current demand independently.
The main trade-off: a genuinely national research institute environment and long-term career stability, against a fixed technical-grade salary, mandatory shift and field-trial work, and posting that could be at either Durgapur or Ludhiana depending on requirement.
