How is the WBPSC Misc exam structured?

The selection process has three stages. You must clear each stage to move to the next. Here is a quick overview:

STAGE 1
  • Preliminary Exam
  • 200 Makrs
  • Screening only. Marks not counted for final merit.
STAGE 2
  • Final Written Exam
  • 450 Marks
  • 3 papers on the same day. Marks count for merit.
STAGE 3
  • Personality Test
  • 100 Marks
  • Called based on written exam performance.

The total marks that count for your final merit list = Final Written Exam (450) + Personality Test (100) = 550 marks. The preliminary exam is just a gateway — it does not add to your score.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (200 marks)

This is a screening test with 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each carrying 2 marks, for a total of 200 marks. You get 1 hour 30 minutes to complete it.

The paper has two parts:

SectionSubjectMarksQuestions
Part AGeneral Studies15075 MCQs
Part BArithmetic5025 MCQs

Remember: your preliminary marks will not be added to your final score. They are only used to shortlist candidates for the final exam.

Stage 2: Final Examination (450 marks)

The final exam has three papers, all held on the same day. These are conventional (descriptive/written) type questions — not MCQs.

PaperSubjectMarksDuration
Paper IEnglish1501 hr 30 min
Paper IIBengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali / Santali (choose one)1501 hr 30 min
Paper IIIGeneral Studies (100) + Arithmetic (50)1502 hr 30 min

Papers I and II are set at the Higher Secondary (Class 12) standard of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education.

Language rules for Paper III

For Group A (General Studies): Write answers in English, Bengali, or Nepali — but all answers within that group must be in the same language.

For Group B (Arithmetic): Write answers in English or Bengali — again, stick to one language throughout.

Stage 3: Personality Test (100 marks)

Only candidates who perform well in the final written exam will be called for the Personality Test (interview). The commission decides how many candidates are called, based on merit.

Your final rank is calculated by adding your Final Exam marks and Personality Test marks together.

Quick preparation tips

  • For arithmetic, go back to your Class 10 WBBSE maths textbooks. The syllabus is explicitly tied to the Madhyamik standard, so cover every chapter from that level.
  • For General Studies, read newspapers daily (especially state and national news) and revise standard GK books covering Indian history, geography, polity, and science.
  • For the language papers, practise précis writing, report writing, and translation regularly. These are skills that improve with consistent daily practice — not last-minute cramming.
  • Since all three final papers are on the same day, build your stamina with full-length timed mock sessions at least once a week in the months before the exam.
