About POWERGRID
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited is a Maharatna Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. It builds and operates India’s inter-state electricity transmission network, moving power from generating stations to distribution utilities across the country. For a candidate, an apprenticeship here means structured, on-the-job exposure to a large public-sector transmission utility’s substations and regional operations — useful groundwork for a technical career, even though it is a one-year training engagement and not a job offer.

West Bengal & Sikkim: what candidates from Darjeeling, Siliguri and the Hills need to know
Eastern Region Transmission System-II, headquartered at New Town, Kolkata, has notified 21 posts split between West Bengal (19) and Sikkim (2). The tentative training locations listed for West Bengal include Siliguri, Alipurduar, Binaguri, Birpara, Dalkhola and Malda — all in North Bengal — alongside Durgapur, Maithon, Rajarhat, Subhashgram, Kalyani, Garbeta and the Kolkata regional headquarters. For Sikkim, the tentative locations are Gangtok, Rangpo and New-Melli.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office: candidates based in Darjeeling, Kalimpong or the Sikkim hills are within reasonable reach of the Siliguri, Malda and Gangtok-area locations by the existing NH10 road corridor and the Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri rail and Bagdogra air links that already serve this region, though POWERGRID assigns the exact posting within the state at its own discretion, and this is not guaranteed for any specific candidate.
Sikkim’s 2 slots (1 Diploma Electrical, 1 Graduate Electrical) are both unreserved, with no ITI or Civil trade notified for the state this year. West Bengal has notified all five trades. See the full ER-II table below for the category-wise split.

POWERGRID Apprentice Recruitment 2026 – Selection Process
The selection process for POWERGRID Apprentice Recruitment 2026 is entirely merit-based. There is no written examination and no interview.
- Applications are screened in merit order, based on the qualifying percentage and the eligibility criteria for the trade applied for
- Incomplete or ineligible applications are rejected without any intimation
- Reservation for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/PwBD is applied as per the Apprentices Act, 1961
- Shortlisted candidates are called for document verification in a 1:5 ratio against the notified slots, in merit order; no TA/DA is paid for attending
- A final merit list is prepared from candidates found suitable after document verification
- Selected candidates must accept a tripartite apprenticeship contract on the NATS/NAPS portal, and submit a medical certificate and police verification before engagement
One practical point from the notice: in Western Region-II, the PwBD benefit applies only to candidates with not less than 40% of the relevant disability, certified by a Government Medical Board — a threshold not repeated verbatim in every region’s advertisement, so PwBD candidates should check their specific region’s PDF.

Reaching the Examination and Training Locations (West Bengal & Sikkim)
There is no written exam for this recruitment, so this section covers training-location connectivity only. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office: the West Bengal locations named in the ER-II advertisement — Siliguri, Alipurduar, Malda, Dalkhola, Binaguri and Birpara — sit along the existing North Bengal rail and road network, with Siliguri/New Jalpaiguri as the main junction point and Bagdogra as the nearest airport for the region. The Sikkim locations — Gangtok, Rangpo and New-Melli — are reached from the North Bengal plains by road along the Sikkim highway corridor. POWERGRID assigns the specific posting within the state at its own discretion, so a candidate should not assume a particular location before selection.

Should You Apply for POWERGRID Apprentice Recruitment 2026?
POWERGRID Apprentice Recruitment 2026 suits a fresh ITI-Electrician, Diploma or Engineering graduate in Civil or Electrical who wants real, one-year, hands-on exposure inside a Maharatna power-transmission company, without paying any fee or sitting a written exam. Selection is purely on your qualifying percentage, so a strong academic record matters more here than exam preparation.
It does not suit anyone hoping this converts into a permanent POWERGRID job — the notice states plainly that completing the apprenticeship creates no claim to future employment with the company. This is added context, not part of the official notification: with several states offering only 1 or 2 slots per trade (Sikkim, Goa, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, for instance), competition per seat in those states is likely sharper than in states with larger counts such as West Bengal (19), Gujarat (17) or Uttar Pradesh (29 combined across NR-I and NR-III). Candidates should also weigh the fixed one-year, non-extendable term, the training-location reassignment clause, and the rule limiting each candidate to one region and state — against other current PSU apprenticeship or trainee openings, if career stability matters more to them than sector exposure right now.
