About Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs)
Railway Recruitment Boards function under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, and conduct centralised recruitment for non-gazetted posts across Indian Railways. There are 21 RRBs located across the country, each handling vacancies for specific Zonal Railways and Production Units under its jurisdiction. For CEN 02/2026, a candidate selects one RRB per pay level and appears for a Computer Based Test conducted separately for each pay level. Detailed information on RRB locations and websites is available on the centralised portal rrb.indianrailways.gov.in. Check all the Indian Railway Recruitment News and Notifications here – Railway recruitments.

This is editorial context, not part of the official notification — confirm specifics with the hiring office. Compared to other central government technician-level recruitment cycles in 2024-25, the vacancy count of 6557 under CEN 02/2026 is higher than most recent SSC and PSU technical recruitment drives, several of which listed vacancies in the range of a few hundred to about two thousand posts. The qualification requirement of ITI or Course Completed Act Apprenticeship for most Technician Grade-III categories brings a wide pool of vocational training pass-outs into the applicant base, which is expected to keep competition high in trades with large vacancy counts such as Fitter (PU & WS) and Welder (PU & WS). Technician Grade-I Signal, which requires a science degree or engineering diploma, draws a comparatively narrower applicant pool given the higher qualification bar.

Should You Apply?
Technician Grade-I Signal and Technician Grade-III under CEN 02/2026 suit candidates who hold ITI certification, Course Completed Act Apprenticeship, or a science or engineering background, and who fall within the 18-30 or 18-33 age bracket as applicable to the post. The recruitment fits candidates seeking entry-level government employment with a defined pay level and long-term service security in Indian Railways. Candidates who have not yet completed their qualification, or who are awaiting final results, are not eligible to apply, since the notification requires the qualification to be in hand on the closing date. Based on comparable RRB technician recruitment cycles, posts with vacancy counts above 500, such as Fitter (PU & WS) and Welder (PU & WS), tend to draw the highest number of applicants relative to seats, while smaller categories such as Crane Driver and Bridge typically see fewer applicants. After selection, technicians generally progress to higher technician grades and supervisory posts over a multi-year service period, a trajectory candidates should weigh against the notification’s condition that no transfer request is registered until five to ten years of service are completed.
