Eligibility for DMRL JRF Posts

Only candidates who hold a degree or provisional certificate in the qualifying course can apply. All degrees must come from a UGC recognised university.

JRF-01: Metallurgical Engg. / Materials Science (7 posts)

  • B.E./B.Tech with first class in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or Materials Technology. A valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score is needed.
  • Or M.E./M.Tech with first class in the same subjects, plus B.E./B.Tech with first class in the same subjects.

JRF-02: Mechanical Engg. (7 posts)

  • B.E./B.Tech with first class in Mechanical Engineering, with a valid GATE score.
  • Or M.E./M.Tech with first class in Mechanical Engineering, plus B.E./B.Tech with first class in Mechanical Engineering.

JRF-03: Chemical Engg. (2 posts)

  • B.E./B.Tech with first class in Chemical Engineering, with a valid GATE score.
  • Or M.E./M.Tech with first class in Chemical Engineering, plus B.E./B.Tech with first class in Chemical Engineering.

  • M.Sc. in Physics with First Division, with a valid National Eligibility Test (NET) qualification.

Age limit

The upper age limit for the DMRL JRF is 28 years as on the closing date of the interview. The limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ST candidates and by 3 years for OBC candidates, or as per Government guidelines. A self-attested copy of the caste certificate must go with the application. Once DMRL intimates the interview date, candidates can check their age with the Age Calculator.

Other conditions

  • The GATE paper and the subject of the qualifying degree must relate to the discipline applied for. The NET or GATE score must be valid on the interview date.
  • Candidates enter marks as a percentage in the Excel sheet. A CGPA or CPI score needs a conversion certificate from the university.
  • Candidates serving in government or government-owned organisations must produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the interview. Without it, DMRL does not allow them to appear.
  • Candidates who have already held a JRF position in any DRDO laboratory or centre cannot apply again.
  • DMRL can reject a candidature for canvassing in any form. It can also reject one for a mismatch in age, qualification, discipline or marks, before or after the interview.

Selection Process

Selection for the DMRL JRF runs in two steps. DMRL screens the emailed applications and calls shortlisted candidates for an interview in Hyderabad. The Director, DMRL, can leave posts unfilled if suitable candidates are not available.

  1. DMRL shortlists candidates with only a B.E./B.Tech or M.Sc. degree with a valid NET or GATE score. It shortlists candidates with an M.E./M.Tech degree based on their percentage of marks in that degree.
  2. Shortlisted candidates appear for the interview. They carry original certificates for verification and a set of self-attested copies.

The Selection Committee of the laboratory decides the award of the fellowship. It may refuse to admit any candidate without giving a reason. DMRL management can amend, cancel or suspend the process at any time, and its decision is final.

How to Apply

Applications for DMRL JRF recruitment 2026 go by email only.

  1. Download the application form, an Excel sheet, from drdo.gov.in.
  2. Fill all entries of the Excel sheet. DMRL can reject incomplete or partly filled sheets without informing the candidate.
  3. Scan all supporting documents, in the order listed below, as one PDF. The Excel sheet is not part of this PDF.
  4. Name both files with the serial number of the post, followed by the candidate’s name. For example, 2Srinivas means an application for Mechanical Engineering. Serial numbers are in the vacancy table above.
  5. Email the filled Excel sheet and the PDF together to dmrlhrd@gmail.com before 27 October 2026.

Candidates should apply only through this official email address and never pay any agent or middleman.

Should you apply?

The DMRL JRF suits candidates with a first-class degree in metallurgy, materials, mechanical or chemical engineering, or an M.Sc. in Physics. A valid GATE or NET score is needed. It pairs research on defence materials with the option of a part-time PhD. The stipend is fixed at ₹37,000 plus HRA.

The trade-offs are clear. The post is temporary, lasts at most four years and gives no right of absorption in DRDO. The interview carries no TA/DA, which adds travel cost for candidates from North Bengal, Sikkim and the North East. A missing document or a partly filled Excel sheet leads to rejection without notice.

Shortlisting rests on GATE, NET or M.E./M. Tech marks, so strong scores help most. Candidates who meet every condition and want defence materials research should apply for DMRL JRF recruitment 2026 before 27 October 2026. They can also compare other government job openings first.
