About Indian Overseas Bank
Indian Overseas Bank is a Public Sector Bank owned by the Government of India, headquartered at Anna Salai, Chennai. It has a branch network across India and a presence abroad. This recruitment is for Generalist and Specialist Officer posts in JMGS I, MMGS II and MMGS III — mid and senior management grades, not entry-level clerical posts. For candidates with banking, IT, credit or risk experience, it is a direct lateral entry route into a nationalised bank’s officer cadre without starting from the bottom scale. Candidates can also check the Government Jobs and Bank Jobs sections on this site for similar current openings.

How This Compares to Other Officer Recruitments in 2026
This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. Since posting under this notification is anywhere in India rather than tied to one state, it is worth comparing this drive’s scale to other recent officer-level bank recruitments: IOB’s own Specialist Officer drive in September 2025 had 127 vacancies, UCO Bank’s Generalist/Specialist Officer notice in January 2026 had 173, Union Bank of India’s officer recruitment in July 2026 had 395, and IBPS’s Specialist Officer common process (CRP SPL-XVI) in July 2026 covered 745 posts across several public sector banks. At 291 posts, this IOB drive is more than double the size of IOB’s own 2025 SO drive and sits in the middle of this year’s officer-recruitment activity.
This is added context, not part of the official notification. The notification lists only six examination centres nationwide — Delhi/NCR, Mumbai/MMR/Thane, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. There is no centre in the North East, Sikkim, or North Bengal. Candidates from Darjeeling, Siliguri, Gangtok or elsewhere in the region who get shortlisted for the online exam will most likely need to travel to Kolkata, the nearest of the six listed centres.

Selection Process
Selection is through an Online Examination followed by a personal Interview. Qualifying the online exam does not guarantee a call for interview — IOB may shortlist further based on qualification, experience and profile against job requirements.
- Online Examination — For Post 01 (Branch Management): English Language (25 questions/25 marks/30 minutes) and Professional Knowledge covering Banking Law & Practice, Indian Economy & Financial System, Principles & Practices of Banking, and Accounting & Financial Management for Bankers (75 questions/75 marks/90 minutes); total 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours. For all other posts: English Language (25/25/30 min), General Awareness with special reference to Banking (25/25/30 min), and Professional Knowledge specific to the post (50/50/60 min); total 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours.
- Qualifying marks — No minimum is prescribed for English Language or General Awareness. In Professional Knowledge, candidates need at least 30% (reserved category) or 35% (unreserved) to qualify. A wrong answer deducts one-fourth of that question’s marks; unattempted questions carry no penalty.
- Interview — Maximum 100 marks, assessing Role-related Exposure in Industry, Subject Knowledge, and Communication Skills. Minimum qualifying marks are 45% (reserved) or 50% (unreserved).
- Final merit — 80% weightage to the Online Examination and 20% to the Interview.
Outstation SC/ST/PwBD candidates who are unemployed and attend the interview are reimbursed second-class ordinary train fare by the shortest route, on production of travel proof, as per government guidelines.

Should You Apply for this IOB Specialist Officer 2026?
This IOB Specialist Officer 2026 recruitment suits two different kinds of candidates. For freshers-adjacent graduates, only Post 01 (Branch Management) and Post 14 (Security, for defence/police veterans) accept a plain graduation degree with banking or security-service experience — the rest need real domain depth: 2 to 8 years of specific IT, security, credit, risk or database experience, often with named mandatory certifications. This is not an entry-level exam; it rewards candidates who already work in these fields.
Competition will vary sharply by post. High-volume posts like Branch Management (100 posts) and Manager IT (65 posts) will likely draw far more applicants per seat than niche posts like Senior Manager (Information Security Audit), which has only 2 vacancies nationwide. One honest trade-off: selection brings a fixed 3-year service bond and liability to be posted anywhere in India, so candidates unwilling to relocate should weigh that before applying. For those who meet a post’s specific experience bar, this is a genuine lateral entry into a Public Sector Bank’s middle-management cadre.
