SMGS-IV32 years45 years

Upper age relaxation applies as per rules: 5 years for SC/ ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 10 years for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, and 5 years for eligible Ex-Servicemen and persons affected by the 1984 riots.

Work Experience

  • MMGS-II: Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience as an officer, of which 2 years must be in processing of MSME Credit, Commercial Credit, Project Finance, or Mid & Large Credit.
  • MMGS-III: Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience as an officer, of which 3 years must be in the credit areas above.

The required experience must be in Scheduled Commercial Banks, Financial Institutions, or NBFCs. MSME credit refers to lending to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, a core function in branch and credit-processing work.

Exam Pattern

The notification gives the online examination structure. The test of English Language is qualifying only, and its marks are not added while preparing the merit list. The professional knowledge test marks decide the merit position.

TestNumber of QuestionsMaximum MarksDuration
English Language (qualifying)2525Composite time of 120 minutes
Professional Knowledge relevant to the post100100
Total125125120 minutes

There is a penalty for wrong answers. One-fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer. No marks are deducted for unanswered questions.

Selection Process

Selection is through online test and/or personal interview, depending on the number of eligible candidates. The bank may also hold only an interview without the online test. The stages are as follows:

  1. Scrutiny of eligibility based on the documents uploaded at the time of registration.
  2. Online examination of 125 marks, where the professional knowledge score builds the merit list.
  3. Personal interview of 100 marks, with candidates called at a ratio of 1:3 to the number of vacancies.

If both the online test and interview are held, the weightage is 70:30 (online examination to interview). One practical point from the notification: candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in each test, and merely passing the online test does not guarantee an interview call.

Application Fee

The application fee is paid online only, within the application window. The category-wise fee is below.

  • SC / ST / PWD: ₹175 (intimation charges only)
  • General & Others: ₹850 (application fee plus intimation charges)

Bank transaction charges for online payment are borne by the candidate. The fee is non-refundable.

Should You Apply?

This recruitment suits candidates who already work as officers in bank, financial institution, or NBFC credit roles and want a stable public sector banking position. The minimum experience bar of three years for MMGS-II, rising to seven years for SMGS-IV, means freshers and candidates from non-credit backgrounds are not a good fit. With 779 vacancies against an experienced applicant pool, competition is narrower than open PO exams, but the professional knowledge test still decides the merit list, so credit-domain depth matters. Career progression after this post follows the bank’s promotion policy, allowing movement to higher scales alongside other officers (this is editorial context, not part of the official notification — confirm with the hiring office). One trade-off candidates should weigh is the all-India transfer condition and the security deposit of ₹2,00,000 for MMGS-II (₹3,00,000 for higher scales), refundable after three years of satisfactory service.
