About Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs)

The Railway Recruitment Boards are the recruiting bodies for non-gazetted posts in Indian Railways, functioning under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. There are 21 RRBs located across the country, each handling recruitment for the Railway Zones and Production Units under its jurisdiction. A Junior Engineer’s job involves technical supervision, design, drawing, maintenance, or field work in departments such as Electrical, Civil Engineering, Mechanical, or Signal & Telecommunication, depending on the post chosen. A Depot Material Superintendent manages stores and inventory at a Railway stores depot. For candidates seeking long-term government service with defined promotion channels, this is one of the largest recruitment drives in the technical cadre of Indian Railways.

What This Recruitment Means for Candidates in Darjeeling, Siliguri and North Bengal

Candidates from Darjeeling, Siliguri, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and the wider North Bengal region who wish to apply for this CEN generally do so through RRB Siliguri, which falls under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone. RRB Siliguri has notified 92 vacancies under this CEN, spread across Electrical, Civil/Engineering, Mechanical and Signal & Telecommunication departments (see the RRB Siliguri table below).

Siliguri is the regional railway and administrative hub for North Bengal, connected to the rest of the country by New Jalpaiguri (NJP) railway station and Bagdogra airport, and by road to Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the Dooars. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm exam centre and connectivity details once RRB Siliguri issues the e-call letter. Candidates from Sikkim and the wider North East can similarly check the RRB Guwahati (329 vacancies) allocation, while candidates preferring postings within West Bengal can check the RRB Kolkata allocation (457 vacancies, the largest single allocation in this CEN).

A candidate can apply to only one RRB against this CEN — the choice of RRB, once made, cannot be changed later, and applying to more than one RRB leads to rejection of all applications.

RRB JE and DMS Recruitment 2026 – Eligibility

Educational Qualification by Exam Group

Candidates are tested and grouped according to one of four Exam Groups, based on their diploma/degree discipline:

Exam GroupDiplomas/Degrees Mapped
Mechanical and Allied EngineeringMechanical, Production, Automobile, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Industrial, Machining, Tools & Machining, Tools & Die Making Engineering
Electrical and Allied EngineeringElectrical Engineering (and its sub-streams)

A three-year Diploma is the base qualification for all JE posts; a Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech) in the same discipline is also accepted. Candidates awaiting their final-semester result are not eligible to apply.

For the Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) post, the qualification is broader: a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any discipline is accepted, not restricted to a specific stream. Candidates with a diploma discipline that doesn’t map into one of the four Exam Groups above must still choose one Exam Group to sit the exam under, in order to apply for DMS posts.

Selection Process

Selection has four stages, in this order: 1st Stage CBT, 2nd Stage CBT, Document Verification, and Medical Examination. Candidates who avail reservation benefits of a community, PwBD or Ex-Servicemen status at the 2nd stage CBT continue to be considered only against that category for all later stages.

  1. 1st Stage CBT (CBT-I) — 90 minutes (120 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates), 100 questions: Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15), General Science (30). This stage is only used to shortlist candidates for CBT-II (15 times the community-wise vacancy, RRB-wise) and does not count toward the final merit.
  2. 2nd Stage CBT (CBT-II) — 120 minutes (160 minutes for scribe-eligible candidates), 150 questions: General Awareness (15), Physics & Chemistry (15), Basics of Computers & Applications (10), Basics of Environment & Pollution Control (10), Technical Abilities of the chosen Exam Group (100). A virtual calculator is provided on-screen. CBT-II marks (normalised where the exam runs in multiple sessions) determine the final merit, using a Merit Index formula that allows candidates from different Exam Groups to be ranked on a common list.
  3. Document Verification (DV) — Shortlisted at a 1:1 ratio to vacancies, based on CBT-II merit and post/zone options. Original certificates must be produced; no extra time is given.
  4. Medical Examination (ME) — Conducted by Railway Administration as per the medical standard prescribed for the allotted post.

There is negative marking of 1/3rd mark per wrong answer in both CBTs. Minimum qualifying marks: UR/EWS 40%, OBC-NCL 30%, SC 30%, ST 25% — relaxable by up to 2 marks for PwBD candidates where a category has a shortage of PwBD candidates.

Application Fee

Should You Apply?

This recruitment suits diploma or engineering-degree holders looking for a permanent, pensionable technical post in Indian Railways, with a defined pay level, promotion channel, and posting across the country. It particularly suits candidates open to being posted outside their home state, since posting depends on the RRB, zone and post options chosen at the time of application, not on domicile. RRB JE/DMS recruitment is traditionally one of the most heavily contested exams among engineering diploma-holders nationally, given the limited number of seats relative to the number of eligible candidates across the country — this is added context, not part of the official notification.

Candidates whose only qualification is a diploma outside the four listed Exam Groups (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Civil and their allied streams) should note that they can still apply, but only for the DMS post, which is open to any engineering discipline. Because DMS draws diploma-holders from every engineering stream rather than one, it may see more applicants per seat than a stream-specific JE post — this is added context and a candidate’s own judgement, not a fact stated in the notification. Candidates who need a single-zone, fixed-department JE role from day one, rather than a broader stores/inventory role, should weigh this trade-off before ranking DMS in their preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last date to apply for RRB JE 2026?

The last date to apply online for RRB JE and DMS Recruitment 2026 (CEN 04/2026) is 13 September 2026, up to 23:59 hrs. The last date for application fee payment for submitted applications is 15 September 2026.

What is the salary of RRB Junior Engineer in CEN 04/2026?

JE and DMS posts under CEN 04/2026 are placed in Pay Level 6 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with an initial basic pay of ₹35,400 per month, plus applicable allowances.

How many vacancies are there in RRB JE CEN 04/2026?

The official detailed CEN 04/2026 (JE/DMS) notifies 3,993 vacancies for Junior Engineer and Depot Material Superintendent posts combined, across 21 RRBs. Some earlier reports before the detailed CEN was released mentioned higher figures (around 4,029 or 4,098), including a since-withdrawn Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant post; candidates should rely only on the 3,993 figure in the final detailed notification.

Is DMS a better option than JE for diploma holders in RRB CEN 04/2026?

Neither is inherently “better” — JE posts are stream-specific technical roles (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or S&T) while DMS is a stores/inventory management post open to diploma holders from any engineering discipline. This is added context, not part of the official notification; candidates should choose based on their own diploma discipline, department preference, and the vacancy count for that post in their chosen RRB.
