About Bank of India
Bank of India is a public sector bank with its head office in Mumbai. It operates under the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and is currently in its 120th year of operation. The bank runs branches across India and overseas, and recruits officers directly into specialist and general banking streams. For candidates, a Credit Officer post offers a regular government banking job with a defined pay scale and promotion path. Official updates appear only at www.bankofindia.bank.in.

How This Compares
This is the second Credit Officer drive Bank of India has run in a short window. The previous cycle, notified vide official notification No. 2025-26/01 dated 01.11.2025, carried 514 vacancies and held its online exam on 1 March 2026. The 2026 drive raises the count to 779 vacancies, a rise of about 52 percent over the previous cycle. This is editorial context, not part of the official notification. For comparison, Central Bank of India has run separate Credit Officer hiring in the same period, so credit-stream openings across public sector banks are active right now. Candidates who missed the 514-post cycle get a second, larger opening with the same broad post structure. The experience bar, however, keeps this an experienced-candidate recruitment rather than a fresher entry route. See more current openings on Latest Bank Jobs.
Important Dates
The registration window opens soon after the announcement. The exam date is not fixed in the announcement and will be shared separately through call letters. Candidates are advised not to wait for the last day, since the application portal tends to slow down near the closing date.

Vacancy Details & Salary
The 779 vacancies are spread across the three officer scales in the GBO stream. The post-wise split for this cycle is awaited. Here’s the breakdown of posts, total vacancy and salary for your reference.
| Post (Scale) | Total Vacancy | Basic Pay Scale (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Credit Officer (MMGS-II) | Split awaited | 64,820 – 93,960 |
| Credit Officer (MMGS-III) | Split awaited | 85,920 – 1,05,280 |
| Credit Officer (SMGS-IV) | Split awaited | 1,02,300 – 1,20,940 |
| Total | 779 | — |
The pay scales above are taken from the previous Credit Officer notification (No. 2025-26/01). The scales for the 779-vacancy drive should be reconfirmed from the new detailed notification when it is published. MMGS and SMGS refer to the officer grade bands used across public sector banks, where MMGS-II is the entry scale here and SMGS-IV is the senior scale. The basic pay is the starting figure, and allowances such as DA and HRA are paid over and above it.
Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for Credit Officer include education and age requirements. Candidates should make sure they meet all the conditions before applying. The detailed eligibility for the 779-vacancy 2026 drive is awaited. The criteria below reflect the previous BOI Credit Officer cycle (No. 2025-26/01) and should be reconfirmed once the new notification PDF is released.
Educational Qualification
- A graduation degree in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks (relaxed to 55% for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates) from a recognised university.
- For MMGS-II and MMGS-III, a professional or post-graduate qualification such as CA, CFA, CMA (ICWA) or MBA / PGDBM / a 2-year PG in Banking, Finance or a credit-related field, plus relevant credit experience. Based on the previous cycle’s reported criteria.
- For SMGS-IV, graduation with 60% plus an MBA / PGDBM / 2-year Master’s degree or CA / CFA / CMA (ICWA), with higher credit experience. Based on the previous cycle’s reported criteria.
- Detailed post-wise qualification and minimum experience are listed in Annexure-I of the notification.
Age Limit
Age is counted as on the relevant date stated in the notification. For the previous cycle the relevant date was 01.11.2025. The age bands by scale were:
- MMGS-II: 25 to 35 years
- MMGS-III: 28 to 38 years
- SMGS-IV: 30 to 40 years
Upper age relaxation applies as per government norms: SC/ST 5 years, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 3 years, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities 10 years, and Ex-Servicemen and 1984 riot-affected candidates 5 years. The relevant date for the 779-vacancy drive is not mentioned in the official notification yet.
Selection Process
Selection is done through an online test and/or a personal interview, depending on the number of eligible candidates. The stages are as follows.
- Online examination of 150 marks in a composite time of 120 minutes, with four sections: English Language (25, qualifying only), Reasoning (25), Quantitative Aptitude (25), and Professional Knowledge (75).
- Personal interview of 100 marks for shortlisted candidates.
One point candidates should note from the notification: the English Language section is qualifying in nature, so its marks are not added to the merit list. Merit is built only from Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and Professional Knowledge. There is negative marking of one-fourth (0.25) mark for every wrong answer in the objective test. When both stages are held, the weightage between online exam and interview is 70:30.
Application Fee
The application fee is paid online and is non-refundable. The amounts below are from the previous cycle and should be reconfirmed from the new notification.
- SC / ST / PWD: ₹175 (intimation charges only)
- General and all other categories: ₹850 (application fee plus intimation charges)
Bank transaction charges for the online payment are borne by the candidate.

Should You Apply?
This recruitment suits experienced graduates who already hold credit or banking experience and a professional or post-graduate qualification, and who want a mid-to-senior officer post in a public sector bank. It is not a good fit for freshers, since the post requires prior credit experience, or for candidates who cannot accept posting anywhere in India. With 779 vacancies, the opening is larger than the previous 514-post cycle, but the experience requirement narrows the eligible pool, so competition is concentrated among working banking candidates rather than the open graduate field. As a Tier 2 note, the typical progression after MMGS-II runs to MMGS-III, then SMGS-IV and above through the bank’s internal promotion policy; this is editorial context, confirm specifics with the bank. One trade-off to weigh: selected officers pay a refundable security deposit of ₹2,00,000 (MMGS-II) or ₹3,00,000 (MMGS-III and above), returned after three years of service, along with all-India transfer liability.
FAQs — BOI Credit Officer 2026
Will the previous cycle’s eligibility apply to the 779 vacancies?
The detailed eligibility for the 779-vacancy 2026 drive is not published yet. The criteria in this article are from the previous notification (No. 2025-26/01) and serve as reference only. Candidates should confirm qualification, age and experience from the new PDF once it is released.
How is a BOI Credit Officer different from a bank PO?
A Probationary Officer is a general entry-level officer, while a Credit Officer is a specialist post focused on credit appraisal, loan processing and risk in the lending function. The Credit Officer role here also requires prior credit experience, unlike most PO openings. This is editorial context.
What is the career path after joining as a Credit Officer?
Officers usually move from MMGS-II to MMGS-III, then to Senior Management Grade Scale IV and higher, based on the bank’s promotion policy and service norms. Growth depends on performance, eligibility and available vacancies in higher scales. This is editorial context, not part of the notification.
Where can candidates from North Bengal appear for the exam?
The previous cycle listed Kolkata among its West Bengal exam centres. Candidates from Siliguri and North Bengal generally travel to Kolkata for such bank exams. The centre list for the 779-vacancy drive will be confirmed in the new notification. Centre details are editorial context based on the previous cycle.
