About the Staff Selection Commission

The Staff Selection Commission works under the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions. It holds the open competitive Junior Engineer Examination for organisations and offices of the Government of India. The Commission selects candidates against the vacancies that each indenting organisation reports.

It has no role in deciding how many vacancies an organisation reports, or how they are split by category. After the final result, the user department receives the dossiers and runs document verification. See more central government jobs on India Job Alerts.

  • Each indenting organisation decides its vacancies, reservation and category split. The Commission does not.
  • The Commission does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies. Candidates should ask the concerned user department.
  • Border Roads Organisation posts are open to male candidates only.

Selection Process

Selection for the SSC JE vacancy 2026 posts has two computer-based papers followed by document verification. The Commission draws four separate merit lists: JE (Civil), JE (Electrical and Mechanical), Scientific Assistant in IMD and JE (Telecom).

  1. Paper-I is a qualifying Computer-Based Examination. It has General Intelligence and Reasoning (50 marks), General Awareness (50 marks) and the opted subject (100 marks). The duration is 2 hours.
  2. Paper-II is a computer-based examination in the opted subject, with 100 questions for 300 marks. Duration is 2 hours. Only normalized Paper-II scores decide final merit.
  3. Post preference is filled in an online option form before the first round of tentative allocation. The preference is final and cannot be changed.
  4. Document verification is held by the user department after the final result.
  5. Physical and medical standards apply to Border Roads Organisation posts. BRO examines them after the final result.

Each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks in Paper-I and 1 mark in Paper-II. The minimum qualifying marks in both papers are 30% for UR, 25% for OBC and EWS, and 20% for all other categories. Selected candidates serve a probation of two years.

What the List Means for Candidates

The list is tentative, and every figure can change before the final result. JE (Civil) posts add up to 867 of the 1699. IMD Scientific Assistant is the largest single post, with 462 vacancies. JE (Mechanical) has only 10 posts, and JE (Electrical) has 108. A small group leaves few seats, so a score near the cut-off carries more risk there.

The posting is the main trade-off. Every post carries All India Service Liability, and the user organisation allots the State, Union Territory or zone. The organisation may ask for proficiency in the local language before confirmation. Border Roads Organisation posts require physical and medical standards on top of the written exam. In return, the job is a Level-6 post with a two-year probation, and confirmation for candidates found fit.

Candidates who want other openings can browse the latest pan-India jobs. This is added context, not part of the official notice.
