Educational Qualification

  • A consistently good academic record with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade) at the Master’s Degree level in the concerned, relevant or allied subject.
  • The candidate must have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC or CSIR, or a similar accredited test like SLET / SET.
  • A 5% relaxation at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level is allowed for SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and Differently-abled candidates.
  • For Music, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Traditional Indian Art Forms, traditional or professional artists with highly commendable achievement may also apply, subject to the conditions listed in the notification.
  • Ph.D. holders are exempted from NET/SLET/SET, provided the degree meets UGC 2009/2016 Regulations. Candidates registered for Ph.D. before 11 July 2009 are exempted subject to the specific five conditions listed in Proviso II.

Additionally, all essential qualifications must be from a University or Institute recognised by UGC or a similar apex body. Foreign degrees need an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Age Limit

As of 1st January 2026, the upper age limit is now revised as follows:

  • General candidates: 45 years (raised from 40 years by the 18.05.2026 notification)
  • SC / ST: 5 years relaxation (so up to 50 years)
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years relaxation (so up to 48 years)
  • Differently-abled: 10 years relaxation (except for Physical Education posts)
  • Approved State Aided College Teachers (SACT): upper age limit is 47 years, with the same category relaxations applied on top of this base

Therefore, this age relaxation is the single biggest reason the extension matters — many candidates who turned 41–45 are now eligible for the first time.

Selection Process

The selection happens in clear stages. The Commission first prepares a provisional merit panel, and then conducts counselling. The eligible candidates will be called for interview, though the Commission may at its discretion shortlist applicants first.

  1. Scrutiny of online applications
  2. Interview and Demonstration (if applicable)
  3. Preparation of Provisional Merit Panel based on academic record, research and publications, teaching experience, and interview
  4. Merit-cum-preference counselling for recommendation

One practical note from the notification — candidates must bring original certificates to the interview, plus self-attested photocopies. SC, ST, OBC (NCL), EWS and PwD candidates must carry valid West Bengal category certificates issued by the competent authority. Candidates from other states will be treated as General. Ph.D. holders should also carry the University’s certificate confirming the degree was awarded in compliance with UGC Regulations.
