About the organisation

The Income Tax Department functions under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and collects direct taxes across the country. The Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Pr. CCIT), West Bengal & Sikkim, is the regional head office covering both states and is based in Kolkata. This recruitment fills TA and MTS posts through the government’s sports quota, under DoPT norms, so candidates with a genuine competitive sports record can join a central government cadre without going through the department’s usual written-exam recruitment route.

Local context

The recruiting office is in Kolkata, at Aayakar Bhawan on Chowringhee Square, and it accepts applications only by post. This is added context, not part of the official notification: candidates from Siliguri, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Gangtok or elsewhere in Sikkim and North Bengal do not need to travel to Kolkata to apply, since the application is sent by post and physical presence is explicitly not compulsory. Confirm courier or postal transit times locally. Kolkata is also well connected to other towns in the region by rail, road and air, which matters for candidates later called for document verification or the Ground/Field Proficiency Test, since the notice does not pay any travelling allowance for either stage. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office. Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in the West Bengal & Sikkim jurisdiction, not necessarily in Kolkata.

The notice states the application must reach the office by this date — not merely be postmarked by it — so candidates sending applications from further away should post them well in advance.

A candidate can apply for TA, for MTS, or for both in a single application, indicating order of preference. If no preference is mentioned, the candidate is first considered for TA and then for MTS, subject to eligibility. The notice does not give a category-wise (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) split of these 82 vacancies — it only asks candidates to state their own category in the application form.

The notice adds one condition here: if suitable candidates are not available in a particular game/sport, the department can choose not to fill those posts and can move the vacancies to another game/sport instead.

Eligibility

Educational qualification and age (per post)

PostEssential Educational QualificationAge as on 01.07.2026
Tax Assistant (TA)A Degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification18 to 27 years
Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS)Matriculation (Class 10) pass or equivalent qualification from a recognised Board18 to 25 years

The educational qualification must be held on or before 01.07.2026; anything obtained after this date is not considered.

Age relaxation: 5 years for UR/OBC candidates and 10 years for SC/ST candidates, as per DoPT OM No. DOPT-1720781414772 dated 04.03.2024. This relaxation applies only if the candidate meets all other eligibility conditions and submits a certificate in the format at Annexure-C.

Sports eligibility (common to TA and MTS)

A candidate is eligible as a “meritorious sportsperson” under any one of these routes:

  • Represented a State or the Country at a national or international competition; or won a medal at Junior National Championships, Khelo India Youth Games (above 18 years), Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games, Khelo India University Games, or the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), in one of the sports listed in the vacancy table above.
  • Represented their University in Inter-University Tournaments conducted by the Inter-University Sports Board, in one of the listed sports.
  • Represented a State School Team in National Sports/Games for Schools conducted by the All India School Games Federation, in one of the listed sports.

For chess specifically, the notice also accepts a Grand Master or International Master title, or participation in a Chess Olympiad (the title must be in the Open category, not a category like Woman Grandmaster), and a medal in the National Team Chess Championship.

Only tournaments/events with a closing date between 1 January 2022 and 30 June 2026 are considered. Certificates must come from the specific authority listed against each competition type in the notice (national federation, state association, university sports officer, school-sports director, or SAI officer, depending on the level), in the matching specimen form (Form 1 to Form 5) attached to the notice. Candidates must also be clear of doping violations under WADA/NADA and must disclose any pending sports-related disciplinary proceedings.

Selection process

Selection has these stages, in this order:

  1. Screening — applications are checked for nationality, age, educational qualification and sports performance between 01.01.2022 and 30.06.2026.
  2. Document verification — shortlisted candidates appear before a selection committee with original documents. Only the attested photocopies and forms already submitted with the application are considered; nothing submitted later is accepted. Candidates already employed must bring a No Objection Certificate from their current employer.
  3. Ground/Field Proficiency Test — to evaluate proficiency in the candidate’s sport/game.
  4. Data Entry Skill Test — for Tax Assistant candidates only, at 8,000 key depressions per hour.
  5. Final merit list — based strictly on the candidate’s best sports performance in the reckoning period plus marks from the Ground/Field Proficiency Test.

No Travelling Allowance is paid for document verification, the proficiency test, or for joining after selection. Success at any single stage does not by itself guarantee appointment; the department can still reject a candidature after further enquiry.

Application fee

Application fee details are not mentioned in the official notification. Check the official website for updates.

How to apply

  1. Read the full notice and confirm eligibility for TA and/or MTS, and for the specific sport/game criteria.
  2. Fill the application in the format at Annexure-A, in black or blue ink, in capital letters only.
  3. Affix a recent, colour, front-facing passport-size photo (no spectacles, sunglasses or headgear), attested by a Gazetted Officer.
  4. Attach attested photocopies of all required documents (see checklist below).
  5. Write this exact phrase on the envelope: “APPLICATION FOR THE POST(S) OF _ FOR RECRUITMENT OF MERITORIOUS SPORTS PERSONS IN INCOME TAX DEPARTMENT, WEST BENGAL & SIKKIM.”
  6. Send the application by Normal Post, Speed Post, Registered Post or Courier to: Office of the Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Headquarters (Personnel & Establishment), Kolkata, 1st Floor, Room No-14, Aayakar Bhawan, P-7 Chowringhee Square, Kolkata – 700069, so that it reaches the office on or before 30 September 2026. Physical presence at the office is not compulsory.
  7. Also fill the Google Form for online submission of particulars — this is an additional requirement, not a substitute for the postal application.

Important: the notice states that if there is any mismatch between the Google Form and the physical application, the physical application is treated as final. Eligibility depends only on the correct physical application; the Google Form is only for processing convenience. Only one application per candidate is accepted — sending more than one leads to cancellation of candidature.

Should you apply?

This recruitment suits candidates with a genuine, certified sports record — national or international representation, a state-level medal, or a documented university or school-games achievement — who also meet the age and education cut-off for TA or MTS. It does not suit candidates without one of the specific certificates the notice lists, since the eligibility route runs entirely through sports achievement, not through a general written exam.

This is added context, not part of the official notification: because many positions carry only one or two vacancies (for example, a single WK Batter post in cricket, or one Post player in basketball), competition within a specific sport and position can be sharp even though the total vacancy count looks large. Confirm current competition levels with the hiring office.

One honest trade-off worth weighing: MTS is easier to qualify for on paper (Class 10 pass, 18–25 years) but sits at a lower pay level than TA, which needs a degree and also requires clearing the Data Entry Skill Test. This is added context, not part of the official notification. Posting can be anywhere in the West Bengal & Sikkim region, not fixed to Kolkata, and no travelling allowance is paid for any stage of the process — candidates should be prepared for that cost themselves.

FAQs

What is the last date to apply for Income Tax Department TA and MTS sports quota recruitment 2026?

The last date is 30 September 2026. This is the date by which the physical application must reach the department’s Kolkata office, not just be posted, so candidates should send it well ahead of the deadline.

What is the salary of Tax Assistant and MTS in the Income Tax Department?

Tax Assistant carries Pay Level-4 (₹25,500–₹81,100) and Multi-Tasking Staff carries Pay Level-1 (₹18,000–₹56,900), both under the 7th Central Pay Commission. The notice does not give an in-hand salary or allowance figure.

Does the Income Tax Department sports quota recruitment 2026 have a written exam?

No written examination is mentioned in the notice. Selection runs through document verification, a Ground/Field Proficiency Test, and — for Tax Assistant applicants only — a Data Entry Skill Test at 8,000 key depressions per hour. This is added context, not part of the official notification: regular Tax Assistant recruitment through SSC usually includes a written exam, unlike this sports quota route. Confirm with the hiring office.

Is there an age relaxation for SC/ST or OBC candidates in this recruitment?

Yes. The notice gives a 5-year age relaxation for UR and OBC candidates and a 10-year relaxation for SC/ST candidates, as per DoPT OM No. DOPT-1720781414772 dated 4 March 2024. Candidates must submit a certificate in the format at Annexure-C to claim it.
