Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for Technician (1) include education and age requirements. Candidates should make sure they meet all the conditions before applying.
Educational Qualification
The base qualification is the same across all six trades, only the trade certificate changes:
- SSC / 10th Standard or equivalent with Science subjects with minimum 55% marks, AND
- An ITI certificate (or national/state trade certificate) in the relevant trade — Electronics Mechanic / Electrician / COPA / Multimedia & Animation / Digital Photographer / Mechanic Motor Vehicle
Alternatively, candidates who don’t hold the ITI certificate can still apply through two other routes:
- 10th (Science, 55%) + 2 years full-time apprentice training from a recognised institution in the relevant trade, OR
- 10th (Science, 55%) + 3 years of work experience in the relevant trade in a Ministry / Department / PSU / Autonomous Body under the Government of India / State / UT
Tip from the notification: part-time, daily wage, visiting or guest experience will not be counted. Also, your experience period is counted only after you obtained the minimum essential qualification — not before.
Age Limit
As of 30.06.2026, the upper age limit is not less than 18 years and not exceeding 28 years.
Category-wise age relaxation (only where the post is reserved for that category):
- SC / ST: 5 years

- PwBD (UR): 10 years
- PwBD (SC/ST): 15 years

Selection Process
The selection has two clear stages, and you must clear the first to even appear for the second. The screening is done by a Screening Committee on the basis of documents submitted with your application.
- Trade Test in the relevant trade — qualifying in nature
- Competitive Written Examination — three papers (Paper-I, Paper-II, Paper-III)
The written exam is OMR-based or Computer-based, with 150 objective questions in 2 hours 30 minutes. Questions are set in both English and Hindi (except English Language questions).
- Paper-I (Mental Ability Test): 50 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour — qualifying paper, no negative marking
- Paper-II (General Awareness + English Language): 25+25 questions, 75+75 marks, 30 minutes — 1 negative mark per wrong answer
- Paper-III (Concerned Subject): 50 questions, 150 marks, 1 hour — 1 negative mark per wrong answer
The final merit list is prepared only on the basis of marks in Paper-II and Paper-III. Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only for candidates who cross the minimum threshold in Paper-I.
Practical insight: carry your original certificates, mark sheets, caste/EWS/PwBD certificates and experience proofs to the test/document verification stage. If the start date, end date, emoluments or nature of job is missing on your experience certificate, the Screening Committee can reject it.
Application Fee
The application fee must be sent along with the postal application.
- General / OBC / EWS: ₹500/-
- SC / ST / PwBD / Women / CSIR Employees / Abroad / Transgender: Exempted (No fee)
- Payment Mode: Crossed Demand Draft / Pay Order from any nationalised bank, valid for at least 3 months, in favour of “Director, National Physical Laboratory”, payable at New Delhi
On the back of the Demand Draft, you must write your Name and the Post Code applied for. Fee once paid is non-refundable and cannot be carried over to any other recruitment.

- Affix a recent passport-size colour photograph on Part I (signed across) and another on Part II (not signed across).
- Attach self-attested copies of: date of birth proof, educational certificates and mark sheets, caste certificate (if applicable), experience certificates (if any), EWS / PwBD / Women / Ex-Serviceman / Transgender certificate (if applicable).
- Attach the Demand Draft of ₹500/- (if fee is applicable).

- The application must reach on or before 30.06.2026. Applications received after the closing date — even due to postal delay — will not be entertained.
Note: If applying for more than one post (different trade), submit separate applications with separate fees for each post.
Tips for Sending Application through India Post Service
Send your application by Speed Post with Acknowledgement Card (AD Card) [Posting Charge Starts from Rs. 47/- depending on weight]— you’ll get delivery confirmation right at your doorstep. India Post no longer offers standalone Registered Post (Domestic) as of September 2025, so Speed Post is the safest option now.
Use a thick green envelope to protect your documents from damage in transit. Write your contact number clearly on the back of the envelope.
Arrange your documents in this order before sealing: application form first, then educational certificates, then experience documents. Punch a small hole on the top-left corner of the entire set and tie it neatly with a thread.
Only enclose what is asked for. Extra documents increase postage costs and make it harder for the employer to sort through your application. [This is General tips follow information as advised in official notification]

Should You Apply?
If you have a 10th pass with Science (55%) and an ITI in any of the six listed trades, the Technician (1) vacancy at CSIR – National Physical Laboratory with total emoluments of ₹44,428/- per month is a strong opening. With only 20 posts across six trades, the Electronics trade (10 posts) is realistically the most competitive while single-post trades like Photographer and Motor Vehicle Mechanic will see the sharpest cut-offs. Central government Pay Level-02 technical jobs with full DA, HRA, LTC and the CSIR Assessment Promotion Scheme are increasingly rare, which makes this opening worth the postal effort.
