Local context / how it compares

This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. Candidates from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri and Sikkim are not left out of this exam. The notice lists Siliguri, Gangtok, Kolkata, Malda and Kalyani among the examination centres under SSC’s Eastern Region, which is headquartered in Kolkata and also covers Jharkhand, Odisha and the rest of West Bengal — candidates from this belt do not need to travel outside the region to sit for Paper-I or Paper-II. Should you apply for SSC JE 2026?

This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the official website. This SSC JE 2026 exam suits diploma and degree holders in civil, electrical, mechanical or telecommunications engineering who want a stable Group B central government posting, and it is one of the few SSC exams open to diploma holders without a degree, in several of the 13 organizations. Competition is likely to be high, since SSC JE draws applicants from across the country against a comparatively small vacancy pool, particularly for the more common Civil and Electrical posts. The clearest trade-off is the All India Service Liability: a selected candidate has no control over which organization or state they are eventually posted to, since final allocation depends on merit-cum-preference in Paper-II. Candidates who need a guaranteed local posting, or who are unwilling to relocate, should weigh this before applying. For those open to relocating, it is a genuine entry point into a permanent, pensionable central government engineering role.
