About Cordite Factory, Aruvankadu

Cordite Factory, Aruvankadu (CFA) is a unit of Munitions India Limited, a Government of India enterprise functioning under the Ministry of Defence. It manufactures propellants used in defence ammunition. For a trade apprentice, training here means hands-on exposure to chemical plant operations in a defence production unit, along with an NCVT-recognised trade certificate at the end of the apprenticeship. This certificate carries weight when apprentices later apply to other public sector or private chemical and manufacturing units.

How This Compares to Similar Openings

This is added context based on similar past recruitments, not part of the official notification. Confirm current openings with the respective hiring offices.

Aruvankadu sits near Ooty in the Nilgiris hills of Tamil Nadu, a cooler climate compared to most of South India. Trade apprentice notifications of this kind — offered by defence production units such as ordnance factories and Munitions India Limited plants — typically open a fresh batch once a year, with vacancy counts in similar defence chemical-plant units usually ranging from 20 to 100 posts per batch. Compared to many state ITI apprenticeship drives, defence PSU apprenticeships like this one tend to pay a stipend at or slightly above the government-notified minimum, and the training record adds credibility on a resume for later NCVT-recognised trade roles.

Note: The main advertisement text describes the 47 vacancies as 20 Non-ITI, 20 Ex-ITI, and 7 Ex-ITI Laboratory posts. The official Annexure-1 table lists all three trade rows under the “Ex ITI” heading. Both descriptions are exactly as printed in the official notification (CFA HRD Advertisement No. 1457), and the total of 47 matches in both places. Candidates with a specific doubt about which trade is Non-ITI and which is Ex-ITI should confirm directly with Cordite Factory before applying.

Stipend per month:

CategoryMonthly Stipend
Non-ITI (Matriculation/Class X candidate)₹8,200
Ex-ITI (ITI pass candidate)₹9,600

No other allowance is paid during the apprenticeship period. The notification states this stipend follows the Gazette notification G.S.R. 610(E) dated 3 September 2025, issued by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and is subject to change if the government issues fresh amendments.

Vacancies for SC/ST/OBC and PH candidates: PH/PWD vacancies are not separate; they are included within the total vacancies as per the applicable provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. If SC or ST candidates are not available for their reserved posts, those posts will first move between SC and ST as applicable, and only then to unreserved candidates. The same rule applies to OBC-reserved posts.

  • Minimum age: 18 years, for designated trades linked to hazardous industries, as per Section 3(A) of the Apprentices Act, 1961
  • Maximum age: 35 years for all categories, as per the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme-2 (NAPS-2)

ITI / Ex-ITI1) Passed the relevant trade test from an institute recognised by NCVT or SCVT (or any other authority notified under the Apprentices Act, 1961), with minimum 50% marks in the ITI examination, in a trade listed under the Schedule of the Apprentices Act, 1961. 2) In addition, must have passed Madhyamik / Class X or equivalent with minimum 50% marks

Important note from the notification: Candidates who have already completed an apprenticeship and hold a National Apprentice Certificate (NAC) are not eligible to apply.

Selection Process

Selection is based on merit, not an exam or interview. Cordite Factory prepares separate merit lists for the Non-ITI and Ex-ITI/Ex-ITI Laboratory categories, and the process runs in these stages:

  1. Merit list preparation — For Non-ITI candidates, merit is based on the overall percentage in Madhyamik/Class X (aggregate of all subjects, or the best five subjects, as per the concerned board’s own criteria). For Ex-ITI candidates, merit is the simple average of percentage marks in Matriculation and in ITI (minimum 50% required in each).
  2. Select list based on vacancy position — Only provisionally selected candidates are called forward.
  3. Document verification — Original certificates, mark sheets, and ID proofs are checked against the application.
  4. Police verification — A clear police verification report is required, though a pending or delayed report will not by itself cancel a candidate’s selection.
  5. Medical examination — Conducted at Cordite Factory premises after successful document verification; date, time, and venue are announced separately.
  6. Apprenticeship contract — Selected candidates sign a Contract of Apprenticeship (signed by a guardian if the candidate is a minor).

Practical point from the notification: No transport allowance is paid to any candidate called for document verification or medical examination — candidates bear this travel cost themselves.

Percentage conversion for grade-based results: If a candidate’s Class X result is declared as a grade (A+, A, B+, B, C+, C) and the board has not issued its own conversion formula, this table applies:

GradeMarks RangePercentage
A+90–10095%
A80–8984.5%
B+70–7974.5%
B60–6964.5%
C+50–5954.5%
C40–4944.5%

Tie-breaker rule: If two candidates have the same marks/percentage, the older candidate is preferred. If date of birth is also the same, the one holding an earlier-year Matriculation certificate is preferred. If that is also the same, alphabetical order of name is used.

Should You Apply?

This vacancy suits Class X pass candidates and ITI trade-certificate holders who want hands-on training inside a defence production unit, along with an NCVT-recognised proficiency certificate at the end. The selection is purely merit-based on marks, with no written exam or interview, which works in favour of candidates with strong Class X or ITI percentages.

It may not suit candidates looking for immediate permanent employment. The notification is clear that Cordite Factory is not obliged to offer a job after training, and a candidate is not obliged to accept one if offered. This is training-and-stipend, not a guaranteed job — a real trade-off compared to permanent government posts.

Competition depends heavily on the trade and category. With only 47 posts split across three narrow chemical-plant trades, and merit built purely on marks, candidates with average Class X or ITI scores may find the SC/ST/OBC or UR cut-offs competitive. Candidates who already hold National Apprentice Certificates (NAC) from a prior apprenticeship are not eligible, so this route mainly suits first-time apprentices building an early trade career in the defence sector.

FAQs

Is there an interview for this Trade Apprentice recruitment?

No. Selection is entirely merit-based, using percentage of marks in Class X (Non-ITI category) or the average of Class X and ITI marks (Ex-ITI category). There is no written test or interview stage.

What is the difference in stipend between Non-ITI and Ex-ITI apprentices?

Non-ITI apprentices (Matriculation/Class X candidates) receive ₹8,200 per month. Ex-ITI apprentices (ITI pass candidates) receive ₹9,600 per month. No other allowance is paid during training.

Does this training guarantee a job at Cordite Factory afterwards?

No. The notification states clearly that the employer is not obliged to offer employment after training, and the apprentice is not obliged to accept an offer if one is made.

Can candidates who already have a National Apprentice Certificate (NAC) apply?

No. The notification specifically excludes candidates who have already undergone apprenticeship and hold an NAC.
