About Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited
APL is a State Public Sector Undertaking of the Government of Assam, incorporated in 1971, with the Government of Assam holding a 51% stake and Oil India Limited holding the remaining 49%. It is India’s largest producer of methanol and formaldehyde, and it was the first company in the country to set up a methanol plant using natural gas as feedstock. Its plants at Namrup manufacture methanol and formalin, which are supplied across India. For a candidate, this means training inside a real chemical-process plant rather than a classroom setup. Candidates can browse other current openings on the North East jobs page.
Working and Living Near Namrup
Namrup is an industrial town in Dibrugarh district, in the extreme south-east of Assam. It is approximately 75 km from Dibrugarh by road and approximately 50 km from Tinsukia. The nearest airport is Dibrugarh, about 70 km away. Naharkatiya is 18 km, Duliajan 35 km, Sonari 20 km, and Moran 55 km from Namrup, so candidates from these towns have a shorter trip than those coming from Dibrugarh or Tinsukia. A rail line and regular private buses connect Namrup with Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Guwahati.

Added context, not part of the official notification: Namrup already hosts other large public-sector plants, including Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited and the Namrup Thermal Power Station, so the area has an established base of technical and apprenticeship-linked jobs. Candidates comparing options in Assam’s oil, gas and chemical sector can also check the Indian Oil Bongaigaon Refinery apprentice recruitment and the IOCL Guwahati apprentice vacancy, both currently open. Confirm current status with each organisation.

Notes on the table above (from the notification):
- Candidates holding an ITI qualification in the Diesel Mechanic trade are not eligible for the Mechanical discipline.
- Candidates without a Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) Certificate will be considered under the General category.
- The notification does not give a category-wise (SC/ST/OBC) seat split; it only gives a marks relaxation, covered under Eligibility below.
Monthly stipend: the notification states the minimum monthly stipend as ₹8,200/- or ₹9,600/- for ITI/Diploma holders, and ₹10,900/- for Diploma in Engineering holders, as per the qualification prescribed in the curriculum and the Apprenticeship Rules (amended 2019). This wording is reproduced exactly as it appears in the notification; candidates unsure which rate applies to their trade should confirm with APL’s HR department using the contact details given below.
Eligibility
The same eligibility standard applies to all five disciplines, with one exception noted separately.
- Candidates must have passed the required Engineering Diploma or ITI examination.
- This must have been within the five years immediately preceding the date of the Walk-in-Interaction.
- Candidates must have secured a minimum of 55% marks in the qualifying examination.
- A 5% relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks is available to candidates from SC, ST(P), ST(H) and OBC-NCL categories.
- Exception: ITI holders in the Diesel Mechanic trade cannot apply for the Mechanical discipline.
- Age limit: not mentioned in the official notification.
Selection Process
Selection is a straightforward, merit-based process rather than a written exam. It runs in these stages:
- Candidates appear in person for the Walk-in-Interaction on their discipline’s scheduled date.
- Merit is worked out strictly on the percentage of marks secured in the qualifying examination (Diploma or ITI).
- Original documents are verified on the spot against the eligibility criteria.
- Selected candidates must complete DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) registration and Aadhaar seeding with their bank account, either before or during their engagement.
If there is a tie in merit, or any dispute during selection, the decision of APL Management is final and binding. APL also reserves the right to cancel, modify, restrict, or enlarge the engagement process at any stage, without prior notice.
Application Fee
Application fee details are not mentioned in the official notification. Check the official website for updates.

Should You Apply?
This suits a fresh Diploma or ITI passout who wants real plant experience in a chemical process industry, particularly candidates from Upper Assam who can travel to Namrup without a long relocation. It is an apprenticeship, not a permanent job. Apprentices are trained and paid a stipend for a fixed period under the Apprenticeship Rules, and there is no promise of a permanent position at APL once the apprenticeship ends. With only 20 seats spread across five disciplines and open to candidates from anywhere who meet the marks cut-off, competition for Diploma seats especially in Mechanical and Electrical is likely to be tighter than for the smaller Civil and Chemical seats. The honest trade-off: candidates gain a recognised training certificate and stipend income, useful for the next job application or for absorption chances at other PSUs, but not job security at APL itself.
FAQs
Is this recruitment through a written exam or an interview?
Neither, in the usual sense. It is a Walk-in-Interaction where merit is based on marks already scored in the qualifying Diploma or ITI examination, followed by document verification at Namrup.
What documents should candidates carry for the walk-in?
All original certificates from 10th onward, Diploma/ITI mark sheets, Biodata as per Annexure-I, bank passbook, Aadhaar, PAN, photographs, and the NATS 2.0 or NAPS registration number, as listed above.
Can a candidate with a Diesel Mechanic ITI trade apply?
Not for the Mechanical discipline. The notification specifically excludes ITI holders in the Diesel Mechanic trade from that discipline; they may still be eligible for other ITI seats matching their trade.
How does this compare with other apprentice openings in Assam?
(added context) Candidates in Upper Assam can also consider the ongoing apprentice recruitments at Indian Oil’s Bongaigaon refinery and IOCL Guwahati, both in the oil and gas sector. Stipend structures across these PSUs generally follow the same Apprenticeship Rules framework, so the pay range tends to be similar; confirm exact figures with each organisation’s own notice.
