About Northeast Frontier Railway
Northeast Frontier Railway is one of the zonal railways of Indian Railways, with its headquarters at Maligaon, Guwahati. It covers rail operations across Assam and the North Eastern states, along with parts of North Bengal and Bihar. A post here is a central government job under Indian Railways, which means fixed pay scales, allowances, and pension benefits under railway service rules. For a candidate trained in a performing art, this is a rare opening that combines a stable railway job with continued practice of their discipline through the railway’s cultural programmes.
Working in Guwahati
The posting is at Maligaon, Guwahati, in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, Assam. Guwahati is connected by rail and air to most towns in the North East, so candidates from Dibrugarh, Silchar, Jorhat, Tinsukia, and Shillong can reach the city within a day by train or bus. The written test and any proficiency test will be held at Maligaon, Guwahati, as stated in the notification.
Added context, not part of the official notification, based on general knowledge of the region: Guwahati has a working culture of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and the region has an active tradition of western instrumental music through churches, schools, and cultural societies in Shillong and Guwahati. This may be useful background for the “desirable” experience criteria in this notice. Confirm any specific benefit with the hiring office.

Should You Apply?
This vacancy suits candidates who already play the saxophone or western classical piano at a trained level and also meet the basic education requirement of 12th pass or Matriculation with ITI. It is not a general railway recruitment; it needs a specific skill built over years, so it does not suit candidates without formal training or performance background in these two instruments.
Competition is likely to be sharp for the same reason it is a rare opening: only 1 post each for Saxophonist and Western Classical Pianist, open to candidates across the country. Candidates with performance experience on All India Radio, Doordarshan, or national-level prizes have a stated advantage in Stage-II.
One honest trade-off: selected candidates can be posted anywhere within Northeast Frontier Railway’s jurisdiction and must serve a minimum bond period after training, so this is a long-term commitment to the railway’s cultural programmes, not only a performing role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an application fee for SC/ST candidates? Yes. SC/ST, Ex-servicemen, PwBD, Minority, Women, and Economically Backward Class candidates pay Rs. 250/-, refundable to those who appear in the written exam. Other candidates pay Rs. 500/-, with Rs. 400/- refundable.
Can candidates apply online for this recruitment? No. The notification asks for applications by post or by hand in the Application Box at Maligaon, Guwahati. There is no online application mode mentioned in the notification.
How does this recruitment compare with other Cultural Quota jobs on Indian Railways? This is added context, not part of the official notification. Candidates can also check Cultural Quota notices from other zones for a wider range of options.
