About IHMCL

Indian Highways Management Company Limited is jointly promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) along with its concessionaires and financial institutions, and is incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956. The company runs India’s Electronic Toll Collection (ETC/FASTag) system on national highways and deploys Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to manage traffic. It is a non-government company that follows the IDA pay pattern. For a candidate, this means working on the technology layer behind FASTag and highway traffic management — a niche but growing area as India expands its digital highway infrastructure.

Eligibility

The notification sets one standard eligibility for the single post on offer, so it is listed here as one list rather than a per-post table.

Essential educational qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in Information Technology / Computer Science / Electronics and Communications / Data Science / Artificial Intelligence, or a combination of the above engineering branches, from a recognised University/Institute.

Recruitment criteria: Direct recruitment through a valid GATE Score in one of these disciplines:

  • Computer Science and Information Technology (CS)
  • Electronics and Communications Engineering (EC)
  • Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA)

Age limit: Not less than 21 years and not exceeding 30 years, as on the last date for receipt of online applications (2 August 2026).

Final-year students: Candidates in the final year of their engineering degree, awaiting results, may also apply, provided they meet all other eligibility conditions. They must submit a Degree Certificate or Provisional Certificate from their University/Institute by 31 August 2026, or their candidature will be cancelled.

Age Relaxation

CategoryAge Relaxation
SC / ST5 years
OBC3 years
Central Govt. employees with 3 years’ continuous service (same or allied cadre)5 years
Persons domiciled in J&K, 1 Jan 1980 – 31 Dec 19895 years
Persons with disabilities — SC/ST15 years
Persons with disabilities — OBC13 years
Persons with disabilities — General10 years
Ex-servicemenPeriod of military service + 3 years

The notification states that all these relaxations are concurrent — if a candidate qualifies for more than one, only the single highest relaxation applies, not a combination of several.

Editor’s note (not part of the official notification): The eligibility section names “valid GATE Score” without stating a year, and the selection-process clause separately refers to the “Valid GATE Score of the year 2026.” However, the document-upload instructions in the same notification ask candidates to upload a “GATE Score Card 2025” and enter the score “as mentioned in the official GATE 2025 Scorecard.” This appears to be an inconsistency within the notification itself. Candidates should confirm with IHMCL (via the contact details on its official website) which examination year’s GATE scorecard is actually required before applying.

Selection Process

Selection for Systems Engineer (ITS) does not involve a separate written exam conducted by IHMCL. It runs entirely on the GATE score, with the possibility of a further interview stage.

  1. Candidates are assessed on the merit of their valid GATE Score (as per the notification, the “Valid GATE Score of the year 2026”) in the CS, EC, or DA discipline.
  2. IHMCL reserves the right to call candidates for an interview, based on a category-wise cut-off decided by IHMCL at a later stage.
  3. If the number of applications is large, IHMCL’s Selection Committee may apply its own shortlisting method to restrict the number of candidates called for interaction or interview.
  4. For the final merit list, if two or more candidates in the same category have equal scores, the older candidate is placed higher in the merit list.

Practical point from the notification: All correspondence — including any call for interview — will be made by IHMCL only through email, so candidates are advised to enter a correct and active email address in the online application.

Application Fee

Application fee details are not mentioned in the official notification. Check the official website for updates.

Should You Apply?

This suits engineering graduates in Computer Science, IT, Electronics and Communication, Data Science, or AI who already have — or are appearing for — a GATE score, and who want a government-linked job without sitting a separate written exam. It particularly suits final-year students, since the notification allows them to apply before final results. It does not suit candidates who want a fixed posting location, since the post carries all-India service liability, or those set on the highest PSU starting pay, since some larger PSUs pay more at entry level through GATE.

Competition is likely to be significant: only 30 posts are on offer nationally, against a large pool of GATE-qualified engineering graduates who track PSU recruitment every year. One real trade-off to weigh: selected candidates must sign a service bond of Rs. 3 lakh for a minimum 3 years of service, payable if they resign or are terminated for misconduct within that period. In return, the role offers direct entry into a specialised, growing area — highway digitisation and Intelligent Transport Systems — with defined pay progression under the E-2 IDA grade.

FAQs

Is there an application fee for this recruitment?

Application fee details are not mentioned in the official notification. Candidates should check the official IHMCL website when applying, in case fee information is added later or shown only inside the application portal.

Can final-year engineering students apply?

Yes. The notification allows candidates in their final year, who are yet to receive results, to apply, provided they meet all other conditions. They must submit a degree certificate or provisional certificate by 31 August 2026, or their candidature is cancelled.

Is there a written exam for Systems Engineer (ITS)?

No separate written exam is mentioned. Selection runs on the merit of the candidate’s valid GATE score, with IHMCL reserving the right to call an interview based on category-wise cut-offs decided later.
