About UPESSC

UPESSC, the Uttar Pradesh Shiksha Sewa Chayan Ayog, is the Uttar Pradesh government commission responsible for selecting teaching staff for the state’s grant-in-aid degree colleges. Based in Prayagraj and set up in 2023, the commission conducts a subject-wise written examination and interview to recruit Assistant Professors for co-education and women’s degree colleges affiliated with the Directorate of Higher Education, Uttar Pradesh. A post through UPESSC leads to a UGC pay-scale teaching position in a state-aided college, rather than a post at a specific named institution chosen in advance.

Local Context: How This Compares

This is added context, not part of the official notification. Confirm with the hiring office. The selection process UPESSC follows — a written qualifying exam, an interview, and reliance on UGC’s NET/SLET/PhD eligibility norms — is broadly similar to how other state public service commissions recruit degree college faculty across India. The difference is in how the posting works: a UPESSC-selected candidate is placed through a centralised merit list and then allotted a specific grant-in-aid college by the Directorate of Higher Education, so the exact college is known only after selection, unlike direct recruitment advertised by an individual university, where the institution is usually known at the time of applying. Candidates outside Uttar Pradesh who are tracking recruitment more broadly can browse other current postings on the site’s Latest Jobs (All India) page.

PwD vacancies are notified for candidates with one-arm, one-leg, both-arm, both-leg, locomotor, visual, hearing and specified multiple disabilities, identified sub-category by sub-category on the commission’s website.

Eligibility

A postgraduate degree with a minimum of 55% marks (or the equivalent grade where a point-scale grading system applies) at the postgraduate level is mandatory for direct recruitment to every subject.

For most subjects (Path A or Path B)

Path A

  • A postgraduate degree in the relevant, allied or related subject from a recognised Indian university (or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university), with 55% marks.
  • Along with this, the candidate must have qualified UGC or CSIR’s National Eligibility Test (NET), or a UGC-accredited equivalent test such as SLET/SET, or hold a PhD awarded as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./PhD Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016, as amended. The notification sets out further conditions — regular-mode PhD, evaluation by at least two external examiners, an open viva voce, two published research papers with at least one in a refereed journal, and two papers presented at UGC/ICSSR/CSIR-sponsored conferences — for candidates who registered for a PhD before 11 July 2009 to claim the NET/SLET/SET exemption.
  • NET/SLET/SET is not required for subjects in which UGC or CSIR does not conduct these tests.

Path B

  • A PhD in the relevant subject, obtained at any time, from a foreign university ranked in the world’s top 500 by the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings, or the Shanghai (ARWU) Academic Ranking of World Universities.

For Art/Drawing and Painting, Music Vocal, Music Instrumental (Sitar), Music Instrumental (Tabla)

Path A is the same as above — postgraduate degree (55% marks) with NET/SLET/SET or a qualifying PhD, subject to the same conditions.

Path B — a traditional or professional artist with a graduate degree, who has:

  • studied under recognised traditional masters or artists;
  • been a Grade “A” artist on All India Radio or Doordarshan;
  • the ability to explain the subject with sound reasoning; and
  • adequate knowledge to teach the principles of the subject with illustration.

Relaxation in qualifying marks

  • 5% relaxation (55% reduced to 50%) in postgraduate qualifying marks for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) and PwD candidates, including candidates with multiple disabilities.
  • 5% relaxation (55% reduced to 50%) for PhD degree holders who were awarded their PhD before 19 September 1991.

Selection Process

UPESSC selects Assistant Professors through two stages, out of a combined 400 marks.

  1. Written examination — 360 marks. 120 objective-type (multiple-choice) questions, of which 30 cover General Knowledge and 90 cover the concerned subject. Duration: 2 hours. Each correct answer carries 3 marks; each wrong or multiple-marked answer carries a penalty of 1 mark (negative marking).
  2. Interview — 40 marks. Candidates are shortlisted for interview based on their written examination score. The interview date, time and venue are notified at least 10 days in advance by SMS, email, newspaper and the official website, and the interview letter can be downloaded from www.upessc.up.gov.in.

Where candidates tie on total marks, UPESSC breaks the tie in this order: written examination marks, then interview marks, then the percentage in the essential qualification along with PhD/NET/JRF status, then postgraduate marks, and finally the older candidate is placed higher. No travel allowance (TA/DA) is paid for appearing in either the written examination or the interview.

Application Fee

The fee depends on category and is paid online through credit card, debit card or net banking at the time of applying.

CategoryFee
General/Unreserved/OBC/EWS and others₹2,000
SC/ST₹1,500
PwD (Divyang)₹1,000

The fee, once paid, is non-refundable under any circumstances and cannot be adjusted against any other application, even if the submitted form contains an error.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the official UPESSC website, www.upessc.up.gov.in.
  2. Complete One Time Registration (OTR) — mandatory before an application can be filled.
  3. Log in and fill the Assistant Professor online application form. Category, sub-category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed once the form is finally submitted, so enter these carefully.
  4. Upload a signature scanned on a white background, in JPG/JPEG format, sized 10 KB–200 KB, with a resolution of 140×110 pixels. Candidates can use the site’s Photo Signature Resizer if their scan does not already meet this size.
  5. Upload a passport-size photograph, sized 30 KB–300 KB, with a resolution between 300 and 600 pixels.
  6. Upload all certificates and testimonials in PDF format, each between 50 KB and 500 KB; the site’s PDF Compressor can help bring an oversized certificate scan under this limit.
  7. Pay the application fee online through credit/debit card or net banking, and keep the payment receipt.
  8. Submit the form. Use the correction window, open until 11 October 2026, only to fix genuine errors — beyond that date, no changes are permitted.

Should You Apply?

UPESSC Assistant Professor Recruitment 2026 suits postgraduate degree holders who already have a NET, SLET, SET or qualifying PhD and want a UGC pay-scale teaching post in Uttar Pradesh’s grant-in-aid colleges. With 1936 posts spread across 42 subjects, Chemistry (179), Hindi (197) and Physics (96) carry the largest vacancy pools, while several agriculture and language subjects have single-digit openings — this is added context, not part of the official notification — where competition per seat is likely to be tighter simply because so few posts are on offer. The real trade-off is that the college of posting isn’t known before applying: the Directorate of Higher Education allots colleges after selection, based on preference, so a candidate should not assume a posting close to home. Candidates who don’t yet hold NET/SLET/SET or a qualifying PhD, or who fall short of the required postgraduate percentage even after relaxation, are not eligible for this notification and should wait for a future recruitment cycle rather than apply speculatively.
