WBPSC – History Timeline

  • 1919 : Government of India Act, 1919 (Section 96C) provided for establishing a Public Service Commission, responding to demands from educated Indians for entry into the civil service.
  • 1924 : Lee Commission (report dated 27 March 1924) recommended establishing the PSC without further delay.
  • 1926 : Central Public Service Commission set up in October 1926 — the first in India — modelled on the British Civil Service Commission.
  • 1937 : Bengal Public Service Commission formed under the Government of India Act, 1935, effective 1 April 1937. Continued as PSC, West Bengal after independence.
  • 1950 : PSC West Bengal accorded constitutional status under Article 315 with India’s new Constitution.
  • 1989 : Entire office shifted to present address: 161-A, S.P. Mukherjee Road, Mudiali, Kolkata – 700 026.
